Amelie is a 2001 French romantic comedy directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. The plot revolves around a young isolated girl going on a journey to end her isolation by stepping out of her comfort zone. The central theme portrayed throughout this film is that when life is lonely you start to appreciate the small things in life. The director explores this idea through the use of film techniques such as symbolism, colour palette and camera angles. The technique of symbolism explores the idea that even if one is surrounded by a lot of people, internally they can be lonely therefore, to overcome that loneliness is an individual struggle. An example of this is through the character Nino who collects random photos of strangers he finds under photobooths and turns them into an album. He does this as a source of comfort to fulfil his need for human interaction which he is unable to achieve due to his closed of nature. Throughout the film he ventures out of his comfort zone ending his isolation by building relationships with real people. The use of symbolism amplifies that when one is lonely and in their comfort zone, to step out of their comfort zone they need to build relationships with others allowing Jeunet to explore the idea that to overcome loneliness one needs to take risks by stepping out of their …show more content…

An example of this is in the beginning of the film where a young Amelie is seen playing with lots of red items and is seen eating red raspberries and red cherries off of her fingers symbolising her passion and vital young mind and also reflects how she is trying to find ways to feel love and meaning in a lonely world by appreciating the small things. The colour red can also symbolise love and romance which is eventually what happened at the end of the film between Amelie and Nino.
