They are a danger to society, they are a menace to our roadways. They are Old People. Old people have been terrorizing the safety and sanctity of our roadways ever since Henry Ford made the model T back in 1908. It is simple really we need standardized licensing requirements for people considered elderly. We also need a way to decide how old old is. If the elderly were to be kept in regulation we would have less issues on the roadway. As a person ages they lose their ability to maintain muscle mass. An important part of driving is steering the wheel and pushing on the brake. I know some elderly people that dont have the strength in their arms to steer the wheel quickly but they still drive. “The body atrophies without physical activity to build or maintain agility, coordination or strength” (Larsen, para #4). This means that elderly people may not have the physical ability to complete required tasks to drive safely. The elderly face problems that younger drivers don't such as problems with awareness. Some of the cognitive effects of alzheimer's on the elderly include: difficulty thinking and understanding, delusion, disorientation, and forgetfulness. These are only some of the many possible effects of alzheimer's some others symptoms impact behavior causing aggression, agitation, lack of restraint, wandering and/or getting lost. Alzheimer's takes awhile to diagnose that means there could be people with alzheimers freely driving on the open roads this is unsafe and dangerous. I would not like anyone with any of these above issues in control of a car. Most elderly people have to take lots of medication to stay alive. Prescription drugs have side effects that can cause drowsiness or affect a person’s reaction
