Film Review: All President’s Men
In June 1972, five burglars broke into Watergate complex, and were arrested on the spot. A reporter of Washington Post, Bob Woodward, starts an investigation to write a story and later is joined by another journalist, Carl Bernstein. In the process, they find out that the break-in leads much higher to H.R. Haldeman, “second most important person in the country” (after President Nixon).
During their investigation, the two reporters used various techniques to get information. For example Woodward had a secret source who always gave information on deep background and was called by “Deep Throat”. Even though the identity of the Deep Throat is not revealed, he is of high position and with a lot of knowledge. From Deep Throat perspective, he is not following his duties to his colleagues by distributing private information, but follows the individual duty to tell the truth in public’s interest. Overall Deep Throat found a golden mean using virtue theory, when he keeps his job but also secretly helps reporter to reveal the truth.
Moreover, the duties of all reporters are to seek truth and report it, in the process act independently (have obligation to only public’s right to know), be accountable and minimize harm. In order for them to report, they had to get information from trustworthy sources, and because of the massive effect of the story, many sources wanted to remain anonymous. Nevertheless, both reporters use original tactics for their sources to be more open and comfortable, which helps them to have some sources named. As to the duty to act independent, they fulfilled it too because they did not use personal relationships and acted only in the interest of public, disregarding their political persp...

... pushing. Both reporters are aware that Clawson’s family and career will get affected if information about Sally meeting him privately is reported, therefore just use the list Clawson provides.
The main moral agent of the story is the Editor-in-chief of Washington Post, Ben Bradlee. It was his decision to commit an act, in this case, publish the article in the newspaper, with a motive of revealing the truth about government workers, to show readers and public at large the truth which ends in ruining Washington Post’s reputation or increases accuracy, and justice take place. Fortunately for the paper and him, Woodward and Bernstein were correct with the facts in the story and helped to tell public the truth. In the end, methods which they used did not matter much because the story did greater good for the society at large and did not cause harm to innocent people.
