Conflict is necessary to develop a thought-provoking plot. The author, Alice Walker, portrays external conflict in her short story Everyday Use. Using characterization, Walker is able to delineate complex relationships between characters that ultimately leads to conflicting views that cause strife. Mama, the narrator of the story, describes her simply life and the relationship that she has with her two daughters, Maggie and Dee. Mama is both gentle and stern, she is a hard worker and she also appreciates everything that she has in life. This appreciation carries into her heritage, she respects all of her relatives before her, and almost carries on their tradition of a simply, self-made life. An example of an author who used a certain line to name their book was Steinbeck, in his story about the Great Depression, “The Grapes of Wrath.” An example of a story in which the author uses the message of the story to portray and derive a title was with Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible.” Further, authors come up with titles, and often, readers do not understand or care to understand the idea of the title.
In both these works, the mothers play the most important role in the development of the plot. They represent the pillars of strength and they are the ones that hold the family together and the hope alive. In Lorraine Hansberry's work, Mama is a widow, mother of two children and the head of the household: "There are some ideas we ain't going to have in this house. Not long as I am at the head of this family." (Hansberry 51) Mama is aware of the high position she is awarded in the family, since her husband is dead and she is left in care of the family. Qualities like independence and strength surround her and give her and air of authority. She takes charge when others hesitate and she gives courage to the insecure. "You just got strong willed children and it takes a strong woman like you to keep'em in hand, (Hansberry 52) her daughter-in-law tells her at one point. This symbolizes the love and respect she carries for her, but also the power that Mama radiates over the whole family.
Even though Mama is a strong woman, there are many flaws. Not so much with her, but more so with her family. Maggie, however, is a simple, scarred young girl who truly understands the meaning behind family, and heritage. In “Everyday Use,” Alice Walker demonstrates through Mama’s eyes, the strain in Maggie and Dee’s relationship through Maggie’s actions towards her estranged sister’s visit, and Dee’s remarks and dominance over her younger sister.

I found myself relating to Mama throughout the plot because I have the same values as she does. Mama wants the best for her family and believes she knows what’s best for her beloved family. Sometimes, though, what she thinks is the best actually is the best, but she’s lets her family convince her otherwise. After Mama bought the house in Clybourne Park, Walter convinced her to trust the rest of the money in him. Mama told him to put a portion of what’s left of the insurance money in a bank account for Beneatha’s medical schooling, and the rest of it was for Walter to invest in a liquor store, which Mama was strongly against.
Mama, as a member of an older generation, represents the suffering that has always been a part of this world. She spent her life coexisting with the struggle in some approximation to harmony. Mama knew the futility of trying to escape the pain inherent in living, she knew about "the darkness outside," but she challenged herself to survive proudly despite it all (419). Mama took on the pain in her family in order to strengthen herself as a support for those who could not cope with their own grief. Author Alice Walker, displays the importance of personal identity and the significance of one’s heritage. These subjects are being addressed through the characterization of each character. In the story “Everyday Use”, the mother shows how their daughters are in completely two different worlds. One of her daughter, Maggie, is shy and jealous of her sister Dee and thought her sister had it easy with her life. She is the type that would stay around with her mother and be excluded from the outside world. Dee on the other hand, grew to be more outgoing and exposed to the real, modern world.
