In honor of Pasteur’s famous quotation, “chance favors the prepared mind”, (Great Experiments 127). I also read about Alexander Fleming’s accidental discovery of penicillin. Although Fleming is credited with officially discovering penicillin, he is not the first to be aware of antibiotics’ existence. Following Pasteur’s disapproval of spontaneous generation, John Tyndall had begun researching penicillin. In Great Experiments, Florey points out that during Pasteur and Tyndall’s time microbiology was not yet chemistry-based, therefore their findings were not fully explored (Great Experiments 127). Nonetheless, Fleming’s unintentional contribution to modern medicine was significant as he not only discovered penicillin but investigated its’ effectiveness
