“The U.S. is in the midst of what Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan calls the "worst rental affordability crisis" ever. Poor families are being hit the hardest: An overwhelming majority spend more than half of their incomes on rent. Others live in substandard housing, or are homeless” (npr.org). The lack of affordable housing makes it hard for families to survive. When most of their money is going to rent its hard for them to afford other utilities and necessities. “High housing costs leave low-income families with little left over for other important expenses, leading to difficult budget trade-offs. Affordable housing increases the amount that families can put toward other important household needs and savings” (housingwire.com). …show more content…

When I was in college at the University of Pittsburgh I never seen so many homeless people living on the streets and sleeping in trash bags. I lived off campus and the housing we not affordable. The places where over priced and there were nothing but slumlords. Since I was on a scholarship I received a monthly stipend to pay my rent, utilities, and other needs. Since I lived in the city people besides college students lived in the same apartment complexes and I would not want to live in those run down apartments with my children. I understand why so many people where homeless because it’s hard to find jobs and the places where expensive. “The persistent, negative equity of many homeowners in neighborhoods that have predominantly minority-group residents or high poverty (the share of homeowners with negative equity in such neighborhoods remained at 27 percent in 2013, nearly double the share in white and low-poverty areas)” (equitablehousing.org).

Housing and Department of Urban Development (HUD) is the service that helps families who fall under a certain criteria with housing assistance. In a lot states the cost of living is high and that’s the reason for the lack of affordable housing. I live
