The novel As I Lay Dying (1930), by William Faulkner is based on the journey of the Bundren family across Yoknapatawpha County to Jefferson, Mississippi. They are on this trip to transport the body of the matriarch of the family, Addie Bundren, for burial. Addie lies dying as the novel’s start, hence the name of the book. Her wish is to be buried among her relatives in Jefferson, Mississippi. Once she dies and after her funeral service, the Bundrens start their trek to Jefferson. The trip is difficult due to storms, family drama, and injuries. Eventually they make it to the town of Jefferson and bury her. Despite her long marriage, Addie has dysfunctional relationships to every Bundren.

By this time, Addie has since realized how terrible of a husband that Anse really is and resents him for making her have another child. Since she hates Anse so much, all she can see in Darl is his father. She believed that he was only Anse’s and not her own because she was not the one that wanted him. This makes her hate her own son, her flesh and blood. There are not many mothers out there that could actually not love your own children, but Addie Bundren is definitely one of those mothers. This treatment from his mother affected him greatly later in life after she died. He is a intelligent, but very isolated man in the novel. He does not form connections with any of the characters except with the youngest, Vardaman. This is speculated because he never formed a bond to the first person in his life, his mother. He may never learn how to do it well because of this. He was not even present for when she left because Anse had sent him and Jewel on a job to try and make money for her funeral. Since he was her first born, she believed that he was the person that took away her loneliness. He gave her life meaning that it never had beforehand. During her final days, Cash stays outside her window and builds a wooden coffin for her to be buried in. He was using this task to keep his mind off the fact that his mother was dying just inside that window. He like Jewel, was also in denial of the fact that they were fixing to lose their mother. To most people, this act would seem strange and cruel, but to Addie, it was an amazing act of kindness. He loved his mother greatly and she loved him just as much. After she passed, he sort of avoided the subject, but eventually accepted it and Cash said, “She’s gone” (AILD 16). They had a very strong mother and son
