Achilles: Invincible Hero with a Fatal Flaw

A hero known for his invincibility. A warrior who fought in the Trojan War and killed many, but also died in battle. Achilles was hero who was dipped in River Styx as a baby by his mother to make him immortal. However, his mother did not contemplate that where she held him, his heel, would remain mortal resulting in his weakness. Achilles was trained by a wise centaur and became the brave warrior he was, he pretended to be a woman to avoid war, and he died by a poison arrow that pierced through his heel.
“Achilles, the handsomest and bravest of the Greek warriors, was the son of Peleus, king of Phthiotis, and Thetis, a sea nymph,” (Otfinoski, 18). Achilles gained his ability of immortality when his mother, Thetis, dipped him in the River Styx. Thetis did not want her child to drown and sink down the river so she held him by his heel. His mother tried to prevent this from happening by dressing him up as a lady. Thetis sent him away to Lycomedes, who was king of Scyros. “There he lived under the name of Cercysera… it is said. Achilles wanted nothing to do with dressing like a girl but … it was the only way to get close to King Lycomedes's beautiful daughter,” (Achilles Handed Over to Chiron). Achilles and Diedameia, the King’s daughter, had a child. Their child’s name was Pyrrhus but would later be known as Neoptolemus. Achilles came out of hiding when Odysseus, king of Ethica, sought for him to aid the Greeks in the Trojan War. Achilles was discovered when Odysseus laid out gifts such as jewels, fancy dresses, and weapons. He then told everyone to choose one.
