In “A Rose for Emily,” William Faulkner stated that "When the next generation, with its more modern ideas, became mayors and aldermen, this arrangement created some little dissatisfaction” (803). “A Rose for Emily” was first published in 1931 during the Great Depression. The transition of the main character, Miss Emily, from an old generation into a new generation relates to the tension between the public and the private. Willow D. Crystal analyzes the short story with supporting details for her claim about the tensions between private and public constructs in Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily.” I agree with the main idea of Crystal's essay because she discusses and supports her main idea with supporting details. William Faulkner introduces the short story with this sentence: When Miss Emily Grierson Died, our whole town went to her funeral: the men through a sort of respectful affection for a fallen monument, the women mostly out of curiosity to see the inside of her house, which no one save an old man-servant—a combined gardener and cook—had seen in at least ten years. (803)
Miss Emily’s life became vulnerable to the public when she died and had a funeral. Crystal stated “The men of the small town of Jefferson, Mississippi, are motivated to attend Miss Emily’s funeral for public reasons; the women, to see “the inside of her house,” that private realm which has remained inaccessible for “at least ten years” (803).
