Death is a matter of two choices: regret or acceptance. One of the two must be chosen, for they are only the inevitable. Regret is the easy choice, for everyone has regret. Acceptance is the hard choice, for only a few people are able to say that they have lived their life to the fullest. Acceptance is the one thing I didn’t want to do, I learned to accept through the wisdom of The Giver. (Before and After Comparison)
I first read The Giver my eighth grade year, I was away from my father who was in the military and had just deployed. There was not a day that I had gone through that wasn’t filled with worry, I knew what my father was going into. It is not possible to be completely certain on the ending of this book by reading this story alone; however, it is possible to gather the evidence and assume what likely occurred in the ending of The Giver. One cannot be sure on what happened at the ending of The Giver; however, I believe that Jonas and Gabriel did not survive. I also believe that there could have been a more effective ending to the story; I highly disagree with Lois Lowry’s choice of leaving it up to the reader to decide what happens in the ending of the story, for it leaves too many unanswered questions. Overall, I did not enjoy the ending of The Giver due to its ambiguity.
