If a hearing individual wants to indicate respect towards a person who is deaf or hard of hearing, I believe that by taking classes in ASL will not only help the individual become fluent in the language, but it will also show that the hearing individual has respect for both the Deaf community and culture. By taking up ASL classes, this opens up a whole new world of possibilities and knowledge for a person who is hearing. These individuals will come to appreciate and respect the culture that has grown from the use of ASL. Picking up on this new language will allow for the barrier of communication to be broken between the hearing and Deaf worlds. By using Padden and Humphries goals of accepting the deaf individual, having respect for the Deaf culture, and encouraging the use of sign language, communities can become much more accepting and educated on a cultural minority that they knew nothing about. Implementations across the community can take place to help integrate deaf activities with activities that hearing people enjoy. For example, during church services, an interpreter can be hired to help translate what the pastor is saying. Local restaurants can also put on closed captioning on TVs for both hearing and deaf people to enjoy. Society can also learn to appreciate ASL and encourage it’s use, instead of trying to force a deaf individual to talk orally. It is also important to inform people about the Deaf culture because not many people would think that a disability would lead to the creation of a culture. I believe that by implementing these acts into our lives, will help the Deaf community gain even more recognition as a culture, and I hope that this spread of cultural knowledge and acceptance will wipe out any previous stigma that people have had towards Deaf
