“A wall of fire rising” is a great story of hoping of a better life and bravely trying to make a dream come true. The story is about a small Haitian family with three people the father Guy, his wife Lili, and a seven years old son called a little Guy. Like everyone else in the village, they work in the sugarcane field from sunrise to sunset. Guy and his family live a normal life until one day Guy’s son recited a speech by Bouk-man, the former leader of independent Haiti. The speech somehow bought to Guy’s mind a long hope for a new and better life. Guy’s dream of a better life started from the suffering of poverty life. All the poverty is described through every specific details in Guy family daily activities: they don’t have many good food instead of eating cornmeal- “they …show more content…

From the moment Guy saw the hot air balloon, he was fascinated in it, which has seen by the look of Lili – she “walked on slowly with her son. For the last few weeks, she had been feeling as though Guy was lost to her each time he reached this point, twelve feet away from the balloon. As Guy pushed his hand through the barbed wire, she could tell from the look on his face that was thinking of sitting inside the square basket while the smooth rainbow surface of the balloon itself floated above his head. During the day, when the field open, Guy would walk up to the basket, staring at it with the same kind of longing that most men display when they admire very pretty girls” (Mays 230). He said to Lili that he can make these thing fly and it made Lili afraid. The desired flying in the balloon is firmly in Guy’s eyes when he told his wife about the operation of air bloon: “Guy reached into his pocket and pull out a lighter and a crumpled piece of paper. He lit the paper until it burned to an ashy film. The burning paper floated in the night breeze for a while, landing in fragment on the grass. Did you see that, Lili?
