“ A Raisin in the Sun” is a play that were produced in 1959 , it was set in an area where racism was still happening and hold a lot of issues in which black people were still facing racial problems. Lorraine Hansberry, the playwright, was an African American women who achieved unexpected success when her play became famous and Not only were successful women playwrights was rare at the time, but also successful young black women playwrights were very unusual thing to hear at that time. However The Younger family faced these problems throughout the play. The entire family was affected in many ways and The younger family has big dreams and hope to make more of their poor lives.
In the play there are many obstacles that each character faces, one character in detail is Beneatha younger she is a strong and independent woman. she is Walter’s younger sister and Mama lena daughter “She is about 20 years old. She is as slim as her brother. She is not as pretty as her sister in law but her lean, almost intellectual face has a handsomeness of its own” , however Beneatha's is not like any other typical 20-year-old black woman in the 1950's because she goes to college and she tries to achieve her dream of becoming a doctor without the help of a man to support her.

Beneatha 's American dream was to become a doctor. She was going to achieve this dream by going to a medical school. Her dream was deferred because of the money Walter lost. Mama said, “You mean your sister’s school money… You used that too… Walter?...” (129). This show that there 's no more money for Beneatha 's education. Beneatha 's American Dream of women 's rights was also deferred because Beneatha lives in a time when society expects women to build homes rather than careers. It was a first play written by a black woman and directed by a black man, Lloyd Richards, on Broadway in New York. The story of A Raisin in the Sun is based on Lorraine Hansberry’s own early life experiences, from which she and her whole family had to suffer, in Chicago. Hansberry’s father, Carol Hansberry, also fought a legal battle against a racial restrictive covenant that attempted to stop African- American families from moving in to white neighborhoods. He also made the history by moving his family to the white section of Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood in 1938. The struggle of Lorraine Hansberry’s family inspired her to write the play. The title of the play comes from Langston Hughes’s poem which compares a dream deferred too long to a raisin rotting in the sun. A Raisin in the Sun deals with the fact that family’s and individual’s dreams and inspirations for a better life are not confined to their race, but can be identified with by people with all back grounds.
Walter and Beneatha’s relationship is very complex. The spiraling tension between the two siblings causes confrontation to form and creep into the Younger household. Walter needs his family to respect him as the man of the family, but his sister is constantly belittling him in front of his mother, wife, and son. This denigrating treatment taints Walter’s view of himself as a man, which carries into his decisions and actions. Beneatha also subconsciously deals with the dysfunctional relationship with her brother. When talking to Mama and Ruth in a scene about marriage, Beneatha’s opinion on this topic shocks the two other women. This proves that women can be in charge of and take care of the entire family. Walter’s belief that men should be in control of the household is debunked by Mama and her status in their family. Beneath, as the outspoken woman she is, argues with her brother on the topic of her education and her career.

She presents her mother with her decision of getting married and how she "plans to find her roots in Africa" with Asagai (Silver).
