Betrayal is one of the actions that humans commit that cause a mix of emotions that can leave a burden with others and ourselves. In some cases, betrayal happens between family and it can cause a major change in their perspective of them. In the play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorriane Hansbury, Walter Lee a desperate man obsessed with a business idea, betrays his own mother when he gives away all of their family’s life insurance. After the death of Walter Younger, his family receives a life insurance check of ten thousand dollars. Mama is practical about the way she wants to use the money, but Walter Lee has a much different idea; he wants to use the money to invest in a liquor store. However, Mama does not agree with this because they are not business people and she does not feel comfortable having a liquor store. Walter is unhappy that he cannot achieve this dream, so Mama who loves her childeren so much, gives Walter what he desires, money and tells him, “The rest you put in a checking account--- with your name on it. And from now on any penny that come out of it or go in it is for you to look after, For you to decide.” (Hansberry 107). Even though Mama is trusting her son to do as she asks, he decides to use all the money including Beneatha’s to invest in his liquor store. Walter entrusts his “friend” Willy Harris with all the money, but he backstabbs Walter and runs away with all the money. Walter not only betrays his mother but himself too, “Oh, God . . . Don’t let this be true . . . Man I trusted you . . . Man, please, I put my life in your hands . . .” (128). Walter has long dreamed of making his family’s condition better, of giving them wealth that his low-paying job is unable to do. Nature appears to be against Walter and his family, for they are living in a poorly maintained tenement apartment while surrounded with racism. Walter understands this situation, so he decides to use the $10,000 check for an investment in order to exceed his primitive state. In mid-morning, he excitedly asks his family about the check’s arrival, “Check coming today?” (Hansberry I.i.868). The check is one of the few reasons that forces Walter to get up each morning, so he will eventually be able to obtain success and self pride. Walter views the check as the only solution to all of his problems, so once Mama receives it, Walter confronts her and begs for her “financial” support. Walter exemplifies his sudden, new-found confidence to Travis when Mama unexpectedly entrusts him with the remaining $6,500, “…your daddy’s gonna make a transaction . . . a business transaction that’s going to change our lives” (II.ii.885). Walter and Beneatha’s relationship is very complex. The spiraling tension between the two siblings causes confrontation to form and creep into the Younger household. Walter needs his family to respect him as the man of the family, but his sister is constantly belittling him in front of his mother, wife, and son. This denigrating treatment taints Walter’s view of himself as a man, which carries into his decisions and actions. Beneatha also subconsciously deals with the dysfunctional relationship with her brother. She desires to have her brother’s support for her dream of becoming a doctor, yet Walter tends to taunt her aspiration and condemns her for having such a selfish dream. The novel starts off with Mariam and the relations between her and her father, Jalil. Mariam haves endearment for her father, she dreamt of living with him. Then there's relation between Mariam and Rasheed, after the betrayal of her father. Throughout the marriage Mariam is the submissive spouse, living in fear. The novel foreshadows, giving a glimpse of a girl name Laila. Laila ends up merging into the lives of Mariam and Rasheed after finding out the love of her life is dead. Relationships can end bad or start off good. With this in mind, the significance of betrayal can either have a positive or negative impact on a person's life or even both. Violation of trust is prime because, without those damaging and hurtful moments , there wouldn't be enjoyable memories.
Living in a society where the fulfillment of dreams is based upon material wealth, the Younger family strives to overcome their hardships as they search for happiness. As money has never been a way of life for the family, the insurance check's arrival brings each person to see the chance that their own dreams can become reality. Whether in taking a risk through buying a "little liquor store" as Walter wishes to do or in -"[wanting] to cure" as Beneatha dreams, the desires of the family depend upon the fate of Mama's check. In the mind of Walter Lee Younger, the check is the pinnacle of all, dominating his thoughts, as he does not wait a second before "asking about money "without" a Christian greeting." He cannot see beyond the fact that he "[wants] so many things" and that only their recently acquired money can bring them about. The idea of money and being able to hold it "in [his] hands" blinds him from the evils of society, as he cannot see that the Willy Harris's of the world will steal a person's "life" without a word to anyone. When money becomes nothing but an illusion, Walter is forced to rethink his values and his family's future, realizing that there is more to living that possessing material riches.
Walter Sr. was Walter and Beneathas father he died and his wife mama received ten thousand dollar for life insurance. Walter wants the whole ten thousand dollars for himself and put it down on the liquor store. But Beneatha wants to go to medical school and be a doctor. Walter thinks that it is selfish of Beneatha that she wants to attend medical school because he then wouldn't get all of the money for the liquor store. Beneatha "that money belongs to Mama, Walter, and its for her to decide how she wants to use it. I don't care if she wants to buy a house or a rocket ship or just nail it up somewhere and look at it. It's hers. Not ours hers." Mamas getting all the money and it is up to her if she wants the money for herself give it to Beneatha for school or give it to Walter for the liquor store. Now that it is getting closer to the date in which the money will arrive. Walter is acting more and more desperate for that money.
Then, Walter's sister Beneatha comes into the kitchen and begins discussing how it's their mother's money, not Walter's and it would be better to spend the money on Beneatha's college tuition instead. Talking about how his mother was going to use the insurance money on him is all Walter tried to do.
After Walter gets the money from Momma he takes it and gives it to Willy, who is supposed to help him with the liquor store, but instead of doing the right thing Willy takes the money and runs. Walter is Mama’s oldest son. His dreams are to be wealth but at the same time wanting to provide for his family. His own personal dream is to open liquor store with his money he receives from Mama.
The conflict that involves Walter and Mama superficially concerns Mama's receiving an insurance check for ten thousand dollars, which she hasn't yet decided what to do with. Walter has hopes for using the money to invest in a liquor store, with the profits providing him and his family a better quality of life than what they have endured in the past.
