For the past 12 years, I have had the privilege to cheer on many softball teams including my own and others from about my home town. Now that my time as a softball player is coming to an end due to age limits and injuries, I hope to be able to coach at the high school level, and possibly middle school as well. As I consider the game of softball to be a serious sport which requires personal commitment and dedication, my preference is to focus on developing my coaching skills in a high school setting. Softball programs are focused on producing highly skilled athletes and preparing them for the highest levels of competition. Through the involvement in sports, athletes will mature physically, emotionally, mentally, and socially. Unknown quoted: “You can’t help others know who they are unless you know who you are.” As a coach, teaching life lessons and using your own personal experiences and values to help form the values of younger people can help them become the best individuals possible. For example, as in a game or competition, young people learn that winning or achieving anything is accomplished through hard work and dedication. Athletics also teach how to well-manage your time and how to balance having multiple responsibilities. In high school, my coaches have expressed to me the importance of being a student before being an athlete. This lesson has been the reason why I have been so successful in my academics and have been able to balance softball, work, and school. Athletes also learn how to work as a team and overcome obstacles such as conflicting personalities or views with other teammates. Having the ability to work well with others in all situations is a skill that an individual will use for the rest of their life. Coaches, and athletes, must be welcoming and accepting to all athletes regardless of their sex, gender, or race. Although contemporary views may not accept “gay” people into sports, I strongly believe it is crucial for coaches to be welcoming and non-judgmental of all athletes they develop regardless of their personal
When you think of a coach, you may think of someone who schedules practice, assigns positions for your team, or makes you run laps for showing up late. Not as often do you think of your coach as your hero, but my softball coach, Ron Hill, goes above and beyond. He not only teaches my team about the sport of softball, but he stresses the importance of becoming a better person through teamwork, responsibility, commitment, and leadership. He is not only a softball coach, but a Michigan native, working father, and my Michigan hero.

Sports play a very important role in my life ever since I could walk. My interests in playing sports began at the age of three as my parents signed me up for soccer, flag football, basketball, and lacrosse. First grade started my competitive edge as I began to play for travel teams in various sport tournaments. This competitive edge transferred from the sports field to the classroom having teachers and coaches helping me be the best I can be. Sports have continually well-shaped and defined my character by teaching me how to accept a win from working hard, also how a loss is an opportunity to learn and fix mistakes.
As a child, Stephen Curry was raised like any other child, except he grew up playing multiple sports. “In an age of hyper-specialization, Curry has reached the pinnacle of his sport by doing the exact opposite. He played basketball, but he also played some baseball, football, soccer and basically everything else in a sports buffet” (Cohen). Now, Curry is known as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. Is this because of his vast background of many sports? In today’s world, children should be introduced to a variety of different sports in order to promote discipline and hard work, prevent injury, and fulfill their college desires.
There is currently a widespread opinion in society that Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people are underrepresented in mainstream sport. Furthermore, sport is considered a field where sexual prejudice is palpable (Gill et al., 2006). Thus, many young LGBT individuals may not have access to LGBT sporting role models, defined as a person that someone observes, models behaviour, and in turn inspires and increases self-esteem (MacCallum & Beltman, 2002) and this may affect their participation in sport. Participation in sports has proven to increase self-discipline and self-esteem, and can teach athletes to learn from their mistakes and move on (Issitt). Athletes playing team sports also develop the ability to work well with others and use teamwork in their everyday lives. Teammates form relationships that are strengthened over a common passion and goal. These relationships can last long after high school is over (Chen). These social skills translate into better communication used with an athlete’s family, peers, and in the community. Likewise, “A 2006 study in Maryland found that student athletes are 15 percent more likely than non athletes to be involved in their communities and to take the time for civic engagements, including participating in voting and volunteer activities” (Issitt). The same study also concluded that athletes are far more likely to be comfortable with public speaking than non-athletes. I am a young ambitious student who strives to excel in everything I do. I want to study Sport Psychology as I know I possess the right skills to further and develop myself in the career of sports. I have the ability to understand others in sports as I also play sports myself. I have been in high pressured sporting situations which I have used my psychological skills to help increase my performance. Sport and identity together have a unique relationship in which any regional or national place can use sport as a means to create a sense of identity. The relationship is complex and varied. Identity can be explained as understanding what or who a person or a thing is. Sport is capable of creating a feeling of nationhood and this is an important factor. It is important too for a nation to create a sense of identity but it is especially important for a regional area. For a small country to host a major sporting event is a significant achievement especially with having rivalry with bigger neighbouring countries. Nationalism can be expressed in a less aggressive manner through sport because there is a clear winner and loser; it is a clear cut way of asserting superiority of your notion over others. In this essay, one regional and one national example will be looked upon to see how they use sport to assert their sense of identity. Cricket in Yorkshire County Cricket Club will be used as a source of a regional example and rugby in South Africa will be used as a national example. We will look at the factors they used to inflict sport as a means to promote their identity and also if these identities are sustainable.
Women in sports is an issue that has dated back for many years. The breakthrough for women was in 1972 when Title IX, an amendment to the 1965 Civil Rights Act, was passed. It was designed to address sex discrimination in all areas of education, including athletics. Athlets have been lookd up to as role models for as long as sports have exsted. There is just something attractive about the thought of being in good physical condition and being talented in sports. But, are athlets the kind of people that children should be looking up to for direction and guidance? Many children often look up to the professional athletes as role models. In fact, in 1995 Sports Illustrated for Kids did a survey for kids who were ages 7 through 12 about who their role model was. The majority of the kids answered that a professional athlete was who they most looked up to. Only four percent of the children answered that their role model was one of thir parents. Because of today?s media, athletes are constantly in the public eye. Everything they do on and off of the playing field. Some professional athletes speak a positive message through their fame by demonstrating constructive ideas such as teamwork and commitment while they are on the field. Even off of the playing field some athletes set a good example by visiting children in schools, going to hospitals, or even setting up foundations and organizations to help the ill and less fortunate people. However, other athletes are not as considerate to the fact that someone may be looking up to them, some athletes are not concerned about anything other than the sport they are getting paid to play and themselves. These athletes are the ones that propose questions over whether athletes should be considered role models or not. A role model can be defined as a person whose behavior, example or success is or can be emulated by others, especially young people. Who would want their child looking up to someone who has been convicted of domestic violence or has a drug addiction? It is an argument of opinion that cannot be settled.
Most obviously, this will help student-athletes, beginning as young kids, all the way through college. Starcher (2015) argues that sport and socialization within it begins to affect children from an early age. Socialization is “the process of social interaction through which children, develop, extend, and modify their conceptions of who they are and how they relate to the social world around them (p. 205.)” Ordinarily, the socialization process begins so early and sport is one of the avenues through which this process is completed, so it is important to study the origin or where the student-athlete identity started to form. In this stage, school tends to have less of an impact and parents have most of the control in assisting identity
My personal philosophy is: I am a coach because of my love for the game and my wanting to teach this passion to others. I believe that playing a sport will not only prepare a child to win, but also for life and the challenges that come with it. I will strive to help every athlete to compete to the best of their ability, while ensuring that are learning skills that will later on better them in their everyday lives.
When athletes of opposite gender play sports together there is a greater opportunity for bonding to occur between the two genders (Cohen 228). This is turn, can strengthen a player’s social development, as stated in “Investigating Coed Sport’s Ability to Encourage Inclusion and Equality.” Too, this can benefit athletes later in their career when they become professional athletes and have to do interviews that are conducted by the opposite gender. Because of them previously bonding with the different sex in sports, they will be more comfortable and better prepared for it. It can also benefit them if they do not have a career in sports later in life. No matter where you work you are most likely going to have to work with someone of the opposite sex. If you play coed sports you will be better prepared with how to deal with the opposite gender and know their tendencies. From researching middle school students, Kelly Osborne figured out that what most young athletes enjoy most about coed sports is the chance to “interact with the opposite gender.” Athletes look forward to being able to play with other athletes of the other gender.
