Action as a genre is mostly commonly defined by a protagonist who completes a set of challenges through various means in order accomplish a specific goal. Though the genre has gone through stylistic changes due to emerging technologies and techniques it has developed some unique patterns. These patterns are often known as tropes and aren’t confined to just one genre. A Man From Nowhere, John Wick, and Gladiator are unique stories that share similar tropes but ultimately tied together by their ability to create immersive worlds. John Wick is an simple story done exceptionally well. It tells of a hitman who upon having everything taken from him seeks revenge. This difference is that Gladiator follows a more traditional Hero’s Journey. This influences a lot of thing of the decision making when it comes to thing like how shots are taken lighting and costume choices for characters. On top more classical approach with the Hero’s Journey the movie incorporates elements of drama and romance which aren’t pertinent to the action analysis. One of the opening scenes show the main character, Maximus, walking through a field bursting his hand over wheat with non diegetic music playing in the background. This juxtaposed with the battle scene it switches between gives the wheat field scene and almost dream like state and it can be inferred from dreaming of being in the farmland that Maximus is ready for the fighting to be over. When he snaps out of the day dream the camera switches over to an extreme long shot to demonstrate the scale of the impending battle. Next the use of a crane shot highlights that war and bloodshed will be constant theme throughout the film. From there the shot moves to a medium shot in order to capture the relationship and general tone between Quintus and Maximus. This shot establishes the Maximus is a good and respected leader not just from his peers but by how the army listen to him. From there the shots continues to show different aspects of the battle like low angles below horses to emphasize their size and power. The battle sequence itself does an exceptional job at capturing the chaos of battle by constantly changing the angles and shot it takes as it follows Maximus. Switching from medium shot to close up shots to capture surprise and fear incorporated with shots where time slows down to capture the immense of death as an axe is swung.
