The Metamorphosis Literary Analysis In Franz Kafka's short story The Metamorphosis, Gregor, the backbone of his family, one day randomly turns into a human sized cockroach. Gregor has been supporting his sister, father and mother until this transformation. Once Gregor becomes a cockroach his life changes and his family life as well. Gregor’s family has never really enjoyed his presence and once he turned into the cockroach his family tries many methods to get him out of the house and forget about him. Kafka uses symbols such as food, doors and the father’s uniform to provide insight into Gregor's dehumanization. When Gregor first turns into a cockroach things start to change including his taste in food. “It was when he had reached the door that he noticed what had really lured him there; it was the aroma of something edible” (Kafka pg 24). Once Gregor turns into a cockroach his food taste takes a major downhill to eating nasty rotten food like a cockroach does. Gregor is overtaken with the desire and want of disgusting food and as he grows to be more and more of a bug he is less able to control himself over objects that seem pleasing to him as a cockroach. Kafka uses the symbol of doors to demonstrate how his family cuts him off when he is no longer a human and the no longer I feel like Gregor was going through dehumanization even when he was not a bug because he would always be very isolated and work to be the backbone of his family, also not socialize with others besides his family. Working all the time for his family did not give him time to think about himself and what he really wants to do with his life.
