December 7, 2017 “A Good Man is Hard to Find” Essay “A Good man is hard to find” is a short story, written by Flannery O’Connor, about a family who decides to go on a trip to Florida. However, the grandmother insists to go to Tennessee instead. The family never make it to the destination, because they get into an accident and get found by the Misfit a prison escape. The grandmother is the main character in this story. Throughout, as the character of the grandmother unfolds and becomes more clear, it can be seen that she is very stubborn and has a willful personality. The Misfit and his accomplices decided to pull the trigger when they could let the family go. The Misfit is certainly not educated and states he would’ve let them go if the grandmother had not recognized him. However, the grandmother’s wilful character does not allow her to keep the information to herself. Yes, he is responsible, but it can be argued that he is backed into a corner as a result of the actions of the grandmother. Thus, when the other family members have no idea who the Misfit is, and they are not pre-occupied as a result of just having been involved in an accident, the grandmother, by recognizing the Misfit, ultimately led to the demise of the whole family. Although nine out of ten people would blame the Misfit, there are innuendoes of the Misfit being made to feel as though he was backed into a corner and the fact that the grandmother recognized the Misfit ultimately left him without a choice. This has occurred as a result of the Grandmothers diversion of the planned route, leading to the meeting with the Misfit after an unfortunate car accident, and eventually the execution of the whole
