However, as she remembered the house was actually in Tennessee she startled her cat whom caused them to wreck. The story does an excellent job describing the final scene and plot revolved around The Misfit and an elderly woman who tried to convenience him he could be a good man. The scene from the accident describes the family going off an embankment with a road “ten feet above them seeing only the tops of the trees on the other side. “The woods that lined behind them,” “like a dark open mouth” and a description of three men looking down upon them (Kirszner & Mandell, 2012,p.228). One in particular The Misfit described as “an older man than the other two.” “His hair was just beginning to gray and he work silver-rimmed spectacles that gave him a scholarly look” (Kirszner & Mandell,2012,p.228). He was described as a polite man even though he held a gun. Apologizing for not having a shirt on in front of the ladies as though he wanted to be good. As the man with the gun stood in front of the grandmother she explained, “ I know you’re a good man at heart” almost begging him to see it for himself. As they elderly women and this man continue it makes you wonder will she convenience him that he can still be a good man? The main protagonist in this story is the self-centered Grandmother whose lack of self-awareness is the reason why her family, including herself, are murdered by The Misfit (the Floridian convict). Throughout the story, the Grandmother considers herself as a good woman; however, it is through dialogue that reveals her true self. In reality, she is selfish, manipulative, inconsiderate, and dishonest. No matter how much she attempts to manipulate others into thinking she is full of integrity and a good example to follow, her actions contradict everything she wants people to believe.
Flannery O’Connor is a master of the ironic, the twisted, and the real. Life is filled with tragic irony, and she perfectly orchestrates situations which demonstrate this to the fullest extent. In A Good Man Is Hard to Find, Flannery O’Connor utilizes foreshadowing, characters and symbolism to impart her lesson of mortality and salvation. We are able to observe minor details within the story through these academic instruments, urging the reader continue on to see how the story will come to conclusion. The knowledge that evil exists in the world, and that stories like this are not uncommon, brings to mind thoughts of my own mortality and salvation. As I read Flannery O’Connor’s short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, I find myself being completely consumed by the rich tale that the author weaves; a tragic and ironic tale that concisely and precisely utilizes irony and foreshadowing with expert skill. As the story progresses, it is readily apparent that the story will end in a tragic and predictable state due to the devices which O’Connor expertly employs and thusly, I find that I cannot stop reading it; the plot grows thicker with every sentence and by doing so, the characters within the story are infinitely real in my mind’s eye. As I consider these factors, the story focuses on two main characters; that of the grandmother, who comes across as self-centered and self-serving and The Misfit, a man, who quite ingeniously, also appears to be self-centered and self-serving. It is the story behind the grandmother, however, that evidence appears to demonstrate the extreme differences between her superficial self and the true character of her persona; as the story unfolds, and proof of my thought process becomes apparently clear.

However, morality and human compassion seem to have very little to do with the definition of “good,” according to the key characters in the short story, least of all the grandmother. We learn more about her from her direct conversation with the son, Bailey, her grandchildren, June Star and John Wesley, and the Misfit killer. Through these conversations, we know that she is a lady raised from a traditional background. In the story, her attitude changes more than once to accommodate the surroundings that she is in. With the data provided, we can tell that the grandmother goes from not wanting to go to Florida, to anxious to go, and in the end, I felt as if she went off the deep end. All of the sudden, the only thing she really concentrates on is Jesus and her not being killed.

Grace was another important theme in the Short story because the grandmother and The Misfit received the grace of God at the end of the short story they were longing for the whole time. The last theme I found in the story was class because all the grandmother wanted was to be a “lady.” She dressed and acted like “a lady” through the whole story because she came from a respectable family and wanted everyone to know if they found her dead that she was a lady.
