1984 Book Report 1984 is a book written by George Orwell with 298 pages. The main protagonist was Winston Smith who lived in a ‘negative utopia’ during the year of 1984. 1984 was heavily influenced by the Soviet Union during World War 2. Winston would question the morals of the society that he lived in and wished to go against them in some way. Throughout the book Winston had broken many of his societies laws which resulted him to be manipulated and tortured. When he was caught breaking the law he was sent to a prison where he was to be psychologically and physically tortured. He is described in the book having blond hair, a natural sanguine face and rough skin. One of Winston’s traits were that he was very rebellious against The Party. On page 18, Winston wrote in his journal, “DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER”, five times in a column. He was out of sight of the telescreens therefore were unable to see what he was doing. Winston was also very bitter to the people who were completely devoted to The Party, because on page 60 it reads, “Nearly everyone was ugly, and would still have been ugly even if dressed otherwise than in the uniform blue overalls”. Winston’s goal in summary was to escape the party or somehow destroy it. Later in the book he wanted to join the Brotherhood, which was a secret group that was against the party. Although most were unsure if it really existed or not. The antagonist was not a person but The Party, the government was Winston’s enemy in the book. The Party was divided into three systems, the Inner Party, the Outer Party, and the Proles. The Party is the government in this utopia and controls everything including the minds of a person. On page 4 it introduces the three slogans of the party, it reads, “ WAR IS PEACE”, “FREEDOM IS SLAVERY”, and “IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH”. They also threaten many with a mascot call Big Brother that had the face of a 40 year old man with a mustache.
