How Music Helped Change And Define The United States In The 1960’s

Rock and roll, one of the biggest and most influential parts of music history that came out of the 1950s and continued to change the United States in many ways through the mid to late 1960’s rock and roll had changed American youth drastically, inventing not only new sounds but a new culture. That culture would be known as the youth counterculture which changed the way everything would be perceived for the rest of time. It gave birth to a new, modern thinking, and morally concerned youth. Which is why I firmly do believe that the music of the 1960s wasn't just for entertainment, but for people to get their point across, to let the government and society know that things
However, personal change which there was a lot of during the 60’s was not one single experience that was shared by everyone it actually affected everyone differently(Ward) Whether the change was noticeable or minute the change was there regardless and it didn't just show up, it was due to a large amount of musical influence. One of the recurring examples used in the essay is The Beatles, who were one of a kind, prior to The Beatles there had never been a sound like that before. They were different and everyone loved it The Beatles made it okay to be different and to not conform was encouraged, it wasn't about being the same anymore it was about being yourself. Another change that had come about due to the influence of a musician was the United States search for social justice and equality which was mainly brought about by the musician Bob Dylan and many others. Spirituality was a very strong and recurring aspect in the late 60’s and was called to attention by many musicians, although the prominent one happened to be The Beatles, who openly accepted different methods of spiritual achievement and turned spirituality into quite a trend that made many people think differently and accepts different possibilities spiritually
It’s very easy to see that if it had happened any differently or if it hadn't happened at all, that the U.S. would be entirely different than it is at this moment. Because of the work of The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and many more talented musicians/artists of that era, whether they helped influence any political, social, or personal change that occurred during that time their work was noted and should be acknowledged. These musicians helped us discover the importance of our individuality, speaking your beliefs (and how to stand up for them), the need for social justice and equality, and accepting things the way they are but how it doesn't have to mean that it should not change. The 60’s started a revolution, one that still hasn't been completely finished, In the words of Bob Dylan, “People today are still living off the table scraps of the sixties. They are still being passed around - the music and the ideas.” -Bob
