Work motivation is employees perceived level of positive energy that affect their work related behavior. Work motivation and employee’s engagement have been one of the highly talked about topics in organizations these days. Companies are vigorously trying to find new and different ways of motivating employees to keep them engaged and loyal. Motivated employees are usually more engaged which leads to better performance and lower voluntary terminations. One of the main contributors to work motivation is employee’s locus of control. Employees with internal locus of control are motivated easily and for longer period of time than the employees with external locus of control. Individuals with higher self-control, and who believe that they control what happens to them tend to have internal locus of control. When employees have internal locus of control, they do not rely on others to motivate them or give them direction. They take charge of what they need to accomplish. If the results are not favorable, they do not get frustrated and stop putting the effort. They recharge themselves and get back to work. They tend to stay happier and focused even during challenging times. On the other hand, employees with external locus of control tend to blame situations or people for what happens to them. When employees have external locus of control, its much more difficult to keep them motivated because they continuously look at external factors that are hindering their performance. Rather than focusing on their own effort, they focus on what is going on around them. People with internal locus of control tend to handle stressing environment better than people with external locus of control since they believe that they control what happens to them. Locus of control is not something that can be manipulated or improved upon. It can be enhanced through experience but people are generally born and raised with their core attitude and belief.
