Edgar Allan Poe Similarity Essay
Edgar Allan Poe 's Stories can be considered very similar. The reason for this is because many of Poe 's experiences have influenced the stories. One life event that influenced these stories is the death of a family member. Poe lost his mother, his foster mother, and his wife Virginia all to tuberculosis. Another reasons Poe 's works are so dark is because Poe had his father abandon him and his foster father disliked him. Poe lived from January 19, 1809, to October 7, 1849. Of all of Poe 's seventy poems and sixty six short stories, three of these short stories will be compared. The irony for Fortunato is that the name is a play on the word fortunate. Now, Fortunato is not very fortunate, as shown by the text saying "No answer still. I thrust a torch through the remaining aperture and let it fall within. There came forth in return only a jingling of the bells." This quote shows that Fortunato has died from his sickness and the cold of the catacombs after being chained up. The irony in the character description of the old man in "The Tell-Tale Heart" is that he has a vulture like eye, yet the narrator said the old man did not expect he would kill him. This is shown by the text saying "He had the eye of a vulture -- a pale blue eye, with a film over it." and also saying "And every morning, when the day broke, I went boldly into the chamber, and spoke courageously to him, calling him by name in a hearty tone, and inquiring how he had passed the night. So you see he would have been a very profound old man, indeed, to suspect that at every night, just at twelve, I looked in upon him while he slept." These two quotes show that the old man has a vulture like eye, but did not know the narrator was watching over him, around twelve, each night until the narrator had killed the old man. The quote that shows this is "there yet came yet another chiming of the clock, and then were the same disconcert and tremulousness and meditation as before.", when the quote says "as before", this means at every hour, the clock chimes and everyone stops what ever was happening. The symbolism in "The Cask of Amontillado" is the amontillado itself. This is because the amontillado was to trick Fortunato into going to the deepest part of the catacombs so Montresor can exact revenge for being insulted with impunity by Fortunato. The quote that best shows this is " 'The Amontillado! ' Ejaculated my friend, not yet recovered from his astonishment. 'True, ' I replied; 'the Amontillado. '" The symbolism in "The Tell-Tale Heart" is the imagination of the narrator thinking the cops know where he had hidden the dead body and the narrator thinking that the old man 's heart is till beating. The quote that best shows this is " 'Villains! ' I shrieked, 'dissemble no more! I admit the deed! -- tear up the planks! -- here, here! -- It is the beating of his hideous heart! '" The symbolism here is the insanity of the narrator in the text is symbolizing the guilt of the narrator when the heart of the dead old man seems to still be beating to the
