Edgar Allan Poe: Analysis

Once reading pieces that were dark and creepy, I began to wonder why this author seemed so strange and sinister-y,

Over many a shady and inquisitive symbols that never seem to bore

While I read readily realizing, abruptly there came a feeling

As of someone speaking, speaking of a deep sore,

“Is a dream,” I mumbled, “speaking of a deep sore”

Edgar Allan Poe once more.

Edgar Allan Poe’s short story, “The Fall of the House of Usher” and poem, “The Raven have very dark, , powerfully visual settings and the use of symbolism is very prevalent. These pieces evoke emotions of despair and a feeling of deep distraught.

“The Fall of the House of Usher”

This short story begins on “ . . dull, dark and soundless day I the autumn of the year . . .”. Through Poe’s use of imagery the audience becomes aware of a sense of death and decay. Roderick, the man who live on the estate property, has companion who comes to visit him. His childhood friend describes the mansion as, “a sense of insufferable gloom [which] pervaded [his] spirit” as he approaches the door of the manor, The House of Usher. Poe later goes on to describe the family catacombs where Madeline is inadvertently buried alive during a catatonic state as being covered with cobwebs in which spiders reside and thrive on the murky atmosphere (Womack). As the story progress an intense storm looms over the manor and worsens as time passes and Roderick begins to hear things from the crypt but ignores them. These sounds are Madeline trying to escape efforts and screams fall in vain as for when she screams the loudest the storm muffles her strain with a loud crack of thunder.
