In the novel Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury creates a world resembling our current world. This novel is about Montag, a fireman who burns books instead of preventing fires, because it is against the law to have books. Without the use of books, people are dumb, and they don’t know what they are talking about. Montag hates the idea of books, but throughout the novel he learns why they are necessary, resulting in him becoming a dynamic character. A definition of a dynamic character is a character that grows and changes throughout a story. At the end of the story, Montag changes emotionally and mentally. Three major events result in a dynamic change in Montag’s perspective. The first event that results in Montag becoming a dynamic character is his conversations with Clarisse McClellan. She is seventeen, and people consider her insane and anti-social. She is considered anti-social, because she is talkative and expressive. In Bradbury’s made up world, the meaning of social is staring at the parlor walls (large TV screens), and having no thought at all. Clarisse is very different from the rest: “I rarely watch the ‘parlor walls’ or go to races or Fun Parks. So I’ve lots of time for crazy thoughts, I guess. Have you seen the two-hundred-foot-long billboards in the country beyond town? Did you know that once the billboards were only twenty feet long? But cars started rushing by so quickly they even had to stretch the advertising out so it would last” (pg.7).Clarisse’s enthusiastic and cheerful disposition lightens Montag’s attitude, making him a more optimistic person. He is not so closed-minded anymore, and he learns to be himself, and sometimes care free. Montag learns to see the brighter side of things and believe in him... ... middle of paper ... ...ny ways; such as learning, exploring, and relaxing. Faber helps Montag to see the real meaning of this unfair law. Without him, he would not become a dynamic character, because he would not have known anything in depth about books. Therefore, these three experiences or people help make Montag a dynamic character. These people or events all affect him in a different way. He learns a lot from them. Montag would have said that they made a huge impact on his life, because he feels different emotionally, spiritually, and mentally. Don’t forget, Montag went from burning books to preventing books being burned. It takes a lot of courage and inspiration for the Montag from the beginning of the novel, to become the Montag he was at the end of the novel. Montag is realizing wrong his world really is. He wants to change it too. He says “ Im going to do something, I dont know what yet but im going t do something big.” He doesnt know what to do yet because at this point he hasnt figured out the “missing peice”. Montag says “ I dont know. we have everything we need to be happy, but we arent happy. Something is missing.” then he starts to understand that books are the key to knowladge and knowledge is what they need. he says “There must be something in books that we cant imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house; there must be something there, you dont stay for nothing.” And this is the turning point of the book because now montag is ready to take
Everyone’s personality changes throughout their lives. But, for Guy Montag from Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, his personality changes drastically in a matter of a few weeks. Imagine a society with no books and only TV. That is exactly the place where the characters in Fahrenheit 451 are living. In their society, citizens do not read. All they do is watch TV and go to funparks. School is pretty much a joke. The students do not learn anything. One of the most important jobs is firemen. Their job is to burn books. Everyone goes along with it because they are completely brainwashed by the government and TV. One character, Guy Montag, dared to go against the norm. Although, at first, he was an average brainwashed citizen, he later rebelled. Throughout the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, the main character, Guy, transforms from an average citizen into a literate rebel.
Granger changes montag as well as faber did but differently, here is a reason “Montag follows the railroad tracks, and he meets a group of men and one man (Granger) offered him a cup of coffee and all of the men talk and get to know each other better and montag talks to the men and got to know them.. Montag has an conversation with granger and he gives him some advice. After all of this, montag feels like himself again by engaging with the world, and he says that faber and granger are alike because they are educated and thoughtful and they both lives as fugitives outside of the society. This piece of evidence will help and explain what granger does to help montag “Granger says that he himself is Plato’s Republic and another man at the campfire in Marcus Aurelius's work. He introduces the men by the authors they have memorized. Granger explains why they all memorized books and then burned them, because keeping the books was too dangerous”. By identifying themselves by the works they’ve memorized, the men show that their knowledge is more important than their identities. In other words, it’s not the medium but the message that matters. Montag tells the men that something is wrong, here is evidence from the text “if his wife dies he might not be sad, he can’t even remember her”. Granger comforts montag and telling him about his late grandfather, a sculptor. Granger believes that people are remembered when they touch the world with thought and care and , in doing so, change it, even if it is in very small ways. Granger changed montag because of his advice and montag followed his advice and he didn’t feel that bad anymore. This paragraph was about how Granger changed montag because of his advice and experience of going through the same
Montag is different than others around him. McGiveron said “An insanity of mindlessness” (Mcgiveron 1). This is the world Montag lives in. He is not alike his peers at all. “Montag has a conscience and a curiosity” (McGiveron 1). This shows he has a special set of traits that is rare in this society. Montag moves past things much better than those around him. An example of this is “even when Montag finally kills the taunting beatty he displaces him syntactically from the center of the action.” (McGiveron 2). Here we see the relentlessness of Montag. To include Montag is special compared to the rest of his dystopian
... ideas in books and understand them. Before this Montag never questioned the way he lives, he was blinded by all the distractions. The role that Clarisse plays in the book enables Montag to break free of the ignorance.
Ray Bradbury's novel, Fahrenheit 451, is based in a futuristic time where technology rules our everyday lives and books are viewed as a bad thing because it brews free thought. Although today’s technological advances haven’t caught up with Bradbury’s F451, there is a very real danger that society might end up relying on technology at the price of intellectual development. Fahrenheit 451 is based in a futuristic time period and takes place in a large American City on the Eastern Coast. The futuristic world in which Bradbury describes is chilling, a future where all known books are burned by so called "firemen." Our main character in Fahrenheit 451 is a fireman known as Guy Montag, he has the visual characteristics of the average fireman, he is tall and dark-haired, but there is one thing which separates him from the rest of his colleagues. He secretly loves books.
Someone else who changed Montag's thinking, changed it by their actions not by tell him anything.<YOU NEED TO EXPLAIN MORE SO THE READER KNOWS WHAT YOU MEAN.> One day the firemen got a call with an address of someone who was hiding books. The firemen, doing their job like always, went to the house to find the books and burn them.
Everyday Montag would rouse, go to work, and then come home and do the same periodic routine the next day. Montag never knew that he was not living his life out to its full potential. Montag was a fireman, who lit books on fire to keep the government from allowing citizens to become smarter than themselves. He never questioned the idea of burning books, because it had always
Montag is influenced by Clarisse a lot. And, her impact on him is tremendous. She questions his whole life, teaches him to appreciate the simple things, and to care about other people and their feelings. “You're peculiar, you're aggravating, yet you're easy to forgive..”(Bradbury 23) Through all Clarisse's questioning, Montag knows that she is trying to help him. Because of her help and impact on him, Montag is changed forever.
Montag changes what he thinks about himself from all accepting to the standards that society places for him to wanting to become his own person. As Montag finishes the job of the night, He “grinned the fierce grin of all men singed and driven back by flame. He knew that when he returned to the firehouse, he might wink at himself, a minstrel man, burnt- corked, in the mirror. Later, going to sleep, he would feel the fiery smile still gripped by his face muscles, in the dark. It never went away, that smile, it never ever went away, as long as he remembered” (2). Montag feels proud of himself and the actions he committed from that moment and before. He is unknowingly following instructions society set for him, and since society accepts him, he loves the actions he committed. After Clarisse leaves with leaving Montag on the
In this section of the book Montag’s character starts to think and change. He starts to question society’s way of doing and handling things. In the book there are actually quite a few parallels with society today. Not quite to the same extent, however they are there. For example, in the book it is abnormal for anyone to just sit and talk about anything that actually matters; in our society, we
People can change due to the influence of other people. Guy Montag changes from being a book burning monster to an independent knowledge seeker due to the influences of Clarisse McClellan. Montag in Fahrenheit 451 by: Ray Bradbury shows how he acted before he changed, after meeting Clarisse, and after meeting Faber.
When Montag meets Clarisse, his neighbor, he starts to notice that there is more to life than burning books. Montag states, “Last night I thought about all the kerosene I have used in the past ten years. And I thought about books. And for the first time I realized that a man was behind each one of those books” (Bradbury 49). It begins to bother Montag that all he has done for the past years is burn books. He starts to rethink his whole life, and how he has been living it. Montag goes on to say, “It took some men a lifetime maybe to put some of his thoughts down, looking around at the world and life and then I come along in two minutes and boom! It is all over” (Bradbury 49) Before, Montag never cares about what he has been doing to the books, but when he begins to ignore the distractions and really think about life he starts to notice that he has been destroying some other mans work. Montag begins to think more of the world
Montag was having what he thought to be great life, until he met Clarisse McClellan. Clarisse was their seventeen-year-old next door neighbor who was raised to ask why and how. When she met Montag, she changed him by making him think about things he never gave thought to before. Clarisse asked Montag if he was truly happy about his life, and when he thought about Clarisse’s question, he realized that he really wasn’t happy. Montag brought about that everything in his life was false and that he couldn’t trust anyone, so he worked to improve his relationship with his wife. He became interested in books, which made him against the new society. From there on improving his life was what became his first concern.
While many people might think that because Guy Montag started out as a firefighter he can not be considered a ‘good guy’ or a hero, but it should be noted that his thoughts and actions are those of a person with good intentions despite starting out as a ‘bad guy’. In my first paragraph I will be stating reasons on why guy Montag should be considered a good guy or a hero. In the second paragraph I will state why his actions and thoughts do not make him a bad person. Lastly, I will state why Montag's actions and thoughts make him a good person.
