In a nation that is plagued with obesity, it is easy to find ourselves being caught up in the desire to not place ourselves in that category. We will do anything and everything to avoid being overweight without recognizing the effects that follow. We focused on the skinny instead of the strong and the half size mold instead of the healthy one. Here is where I want to analyze the psychological the physical distress that comes from Eating Disorders, and where they stem from. Pinpointing also how social media has played a large part in shaping our views and ideas of the human body and our own personal self image. Eating Disorders often come with a heavy consequence that many often fail to recognize. Once an individual starts to lose weight, that is what becomes the main focus. It is short term and results may come quickly, but what they don’t realize is that once those pounds start to shed, other things begin to drop as well. Anorexia Nervosa is inadequate food intake that leads to a body weight that is unhealthy and too low. This is considered to be self starvation and the body is derived from essential nutrients and minerals. Blood pressure, bone density, muscle mass all take a dive and kidney failure is common. Hair dries and falls out, and soon enough, the body starts to produce a downy layer of hair called lanugo because the body is struggling to keep itself warm ( National Eating Disorders). Anorexia often goes hand in hand with Bulimia Nervosa, which is a consumption of large amounts of food, which is then followed with self induced vomiting. This harmful binge-and purge-system is extremely dangerous and is hard on digestive system. The acid in your stomach is so powerful and toxic that it can burn through carpet.
