The purpose of this paper is to juxtapose the idea of ‘Fragmentation’ in technology with concepts in theoretical philosophy.

The concept of ‘Fragmentation’

Fragmentation is a technological phenomenon which occurs in computers. The process takes place in the hard disk when a file or data is being deleted or saved or changed. The changes made are being saved at another location, different from the location where the original file is being stored. Additional changes keep getting saved at different locations leading to fragmentation of both the data and the hard disk. Due to this, the computer slows down as it has to locate all broken pieces of a file (or information) and arrange them in an order.

Now, hypothetically replace a software program such as a word file with the idea of a ‘belief’ or ‘judgement’.

Evidently so, were not born with the judgements that we carry today, we learn through experience and learning. So, suppose a judgement was put inside one’s mind at some time t1.But at time t2, one realises that the judgement was faulty and it needs some changes, so s/he modify the judgement. This is a never ending process; to quote Heraclitus, “Change is the only constant thing.”So, at different times (Say t1,t2, t3…)we have different beliefs and all those beliefs continue to stay in our mind and contradict each other at times, creating situations of sheer confusion, often.

Just like a single word file is saved at multiple locations making it hard for the computer to locate, fast and accurately, similarly our thoughts’ modifications are saved at multiple places making it even harder for us to reach a conclusion in case of a dilemma.

Let us take an example.

As a kid say ‘X’ was being asked to believe in God, and ‘X’...

...e and disturb the setting then all of the progress is lost and one has to start the entire procedure all over again. So, it is advised to be patient and wait for the final results. Same amount of patience should be shown with the art of meditation as the results are peaceful, soothing, satisfactory and delightful.
