The Crips, originating in Los Angeles, California, are one of the oldest, largest, and most notorious gangs in the United States. They have been involved in murders, robberies and drug dealing in the Los Angeles area. The Crips are mostly identified by the blue color worn by their members. What was once a single gang is now a loose network of "franchises" around the United States. The gang primarily (but not exclusively) comprises African Americans. The Crips have an intense rivalry with the Bloods and are also known to feud with Chicano gangs. The Crips were founded in Los Angeles, California in 1969 by 15-year-old Raymond Washington. Washington initially called the gang the Baby Avenues in an attempt to emulate older gangs and activities carried out by the Black Panthers with which he was fascinated. This evolved to Avenue Cribs and then Cribs as nicknames for the age of the members.[1] The name Crips was first introduced in the Los Angeles Sentinel newspaper in a description by crime victims of young men with canes, as if they were crippled (though there is some discussion that it may have initially been a simple spelling mistake). The name stuck. Stanley Tookie Williams, generally acknowledged as co-founder of the Crips, [2] started his own gang called the Westside Crips. The Crips became popular throughout southern Los Angeles as more youth gangs joined it; at one point they outnumbered non-Crip gangs by 3 to 1, sparking disputes with non-Crip gangs including the L.A. Brims, Athens Park Boys, the Bishops and the Denver Lanes. The Crips eventually became the most powerful gang in California. In response, all of the other besieged gangs, including the Pirus, formed an alliance that later became the Bloods. More recently, however, the Crips have begun to cease the use of colors as a means of identification, since it is likely to draw attention from police. Methods such as the use of college sport team jerseys and hats are sometimes used, but in general, what set a certain gang member claims can be determined solely by their tattoos. Many Crips will also change words containing the letter B or choose another word to replace it, the best being a word with a C. This is due to their hatred of Bloods. If no word can reasonably be substituted, the letter B will be crossed out to show disrespect. Sometimes excessive use of the letter C also occurs, such as "be right baCC" to refrain from using the initials "ck" which stands for "Crip Killer." Also the letter B can be written Bk as in "Blood Killer."

They are a national gang. Of course, the gang is not as big here as where it originated in California. However, it is considered to be one of the largest gangs in the United States. That I do remember from gang class. Also, to be accepted into the gang, one must take a beating from members. This gang is known for violence and they do not hesitate to use extreme actions when protecting their turf against rivals or the police. They are big with the selling and distribution of crack cocaine, PCP along with other drugs. Other activities would be armed robberies, auto theft, assault and murder (Cruz, 2015).
The responsibilities of a Gangster Disciples "Governor-of-Governors" and "Governor" include, but are not limited to, setting membership recruitment goals; communicating with national leadership, including through telephone conference calls to a national call-in number; enforcing gang codes and rules; collecting and disbursing of dues and funds; and approving certain forms of criminal activity to be carried out by gang members and associates. As the highest ranking Gangster Disciple within a state, a Governor is aware of and coordinates much of the criminal activity occurring within that state. This information is then passed up to the Governor-of Governors, who coordinates gang activity within several states. A state's "Assistant Governor" for the Gangster Disciples is responsible to the governor for collecting dues from the various counts, ensuring that anyone claiming membership is in fact "plugged in" and "on count” and recruiting new members into the gang. Each state has a "Chief Enforcer," who is responsible for enforcing the gang's codes, rules and regulations. The State Chief Enforcer is responsible for seeing that punishment, including "Kill on Sight" ("KOS") orders and "green-lights" which authorize physical punishment, is effectuated for Gangster Disciples members who violate gang rules. The Chief Enforcer is also responsible for ensuring that people who claim to be members of the Gangster Disciples are in fact members in good standing. Each count also has a Chief Enforcer who is responsible for enforcing gang rules within that count. Chief Enforcers command "enforcement teams" and "clean-up crews" comprised of Gangster Disciples members for the purpose of administering discipline, including assaults and killings. Next, the Rollin 60’s Crips are a subculture of the Crip gang. There are thousands of smaller gangs who are Crips, but are not all from the same neighborhoods. It always was weird to me that there could be hundreds of Crip gang members, but they don’t all get along when they’re from different neighborhoods even though they represent the same things. The Crip gang’s main color is blue. They tie their bandanas on any part of their bodies to represent their flag. They’re known for tucking bandana half way in their back pocket on the left side. Crips and Bloods: Made in America took place in south of Los Angeles focusing on gang violence among two fearsome African American gangs, Crips and Bloods. The documentary sends the viewer to the roots of the social strains of African American people that created Crips and Bloods. After the Civil War in the United States, slaves were granted freedom, they moved far from the south. As time passed African Americans were faced with many hardships from loss of jobs to racial profiling from law enforcement.
The Crips, as we learned in module 3 are one of the most notorious black or predominately African American gang founded in Southern Los Angeles, California in 1969. This gang was co-found by 16-year-old Raymond Washington and Stanley Tookie Williams III. Even before the Crips however, there was a gang known as the Hoover Groovers. The Hoover Groovers would later form an alliance with the Crips and change their name to Hoover Crips.
Crip founder, Stanly Williams III, also known as “Tookie”, was born December 29,1953 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was known for being a gang member, an Activist, as well as a writer. Mr. Williams and his mother left New Orleans in 1959, shortly after his father abandoned the family. They moved to Los Angeles hoping to find a better way of life for Tookie and his family. He described the neighborhood as an “Affluent –looking South Central Neighborhood,” where they rented their first apartment. Tookie Williams began to wander the streets at the age of six. He began to find the streets more interesting than being at home. As him being the new kid on the block, he had to learn quickly how to defend himself from the neighborhood
The Bloods is a big time gang group that has over twenty-five different gangs in the city of Los Angeles. They are known for killing and murdering other people or other gang members. This gang is mostly an African American youth gang. they are not a normal gang because they promote themselves all over L.A.. This is not the only violent gang in the gang community gangs also consist of different races such as hispanic gang members and European American gang. These gang members are one of the biggest reasons that there is so much crime in the L.A. area. The gangs in L.A. are becoming more violent and causing more problems that and they are even getting into the illegal drug business.
The Bloods and Crips are two of the most known gangs in The United States. The Crips are a primarily African American gang. They started in Los Angeles in 1969 by Raymond Washington and Stanley Williams. The estimated number of members is about thirty to fifty-thousand. The gang formed when Washington and Stanley united their smaller street gangs from the west and east sides of South Central Los Angeles. The documentary, “Crips and Bloods: Made in America” talks about many social concerns. In the documentary, both discrimination and economics are the main factors for the problems in Southern California. The gangs started because of discrimination. By denying people because of their skin color to join social activities such as the boy/girl scouts is what led to the formation of groups that later turned into gangs. Apart from that, hatred and threats escalated the situations that then turned the gangs into what they are today. The emrgence and growth of traditional gangs in America like the ones in New York, Chicago, Los Angelos and Southern gangs all started out light, nothing too violent happening in the communities until these cities grew over time. One of the first gangs gangs that were started in the Northeast region of America happened to be in New York. One of the first gangs in New York was named Forty Thieves, who was made up of local thieves, pickpocketing and thugs. Other gangs came about such as the Kerryonians, Bowery Boys and the Five Point gangs, there happened to be a ballte between the Bowery Boys and Five Point gang, these two gangs are too close together which is why there was a battle between the two, they were trying to etsablish who's the best gang and fighitng over territory. Sometimes these gangs of New York City out-manned the police to the point where they had to get the National Guard and even the army to stop the fights.
