“Courage is when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what” that what Atticus Finch thinks Courage is. Courage is a major theme in the book by Harper Lee called To Kill a Mockingbird and how it is shown in the characters of this novel. Courage is shown in Jem, Scout, Mrs. Dubose and the main character which showed a lot of courage was Atticus. Courage is shown in Jem and Scout many times throughout the novel and here are some of them. Early in the novel, Scout shows courage she had on the first day of school. She becomes brave to tell Miss. Caroline about Walter Cunningham’s problem and his situation. Miss. Caroline scolds Scout for knowing how to read. Scout thinks the class needs leadership because most children at her age fear to speak to their teacher in such was. She was courageous to speak about Walter’s situation. Jem faced a courageous situation when he left his pants at the Radley house. He was more courageous to go get them rather than worrying about Atticus whipping him. Jem risked his life from getting Atticus mad, he could get shot but he still went and got his pants. The courage he had which saves him from bad decision. Courage was shown again when Jem, Scout, and Dill were playing around and Dill dared Jem to go touch the Radley place. So Jem runs very fast and touch the side of Radley place back. Even though that Jem knew he would get in trouble or something would happen he still was courageous to go the Radley place which no was courageous enough to do. Jem and Scout have show courage many other times. “Your father’s no better than the niggers and the trash he works for!” said Mrs. Dubose. When she mouthed Atticus like that, Jem got mad and decided that... ... middle of paper ... ... people of Maycomb to hear the truth about Tom. “That boy may go to the chair, but he’s not going till the truth is told.” Atticus later show bravery when he went to the jailhouse to protect Tom from a mob. Without thinking twice he rushed for Tom. He knew that mob would outnumber him and he would be easy beaten. Still, he put Tom’s well being after his own. Within all the examples of courage there is not a situation there is not where character weren’t courageous during that time. Jem, Scout, Mrs. Dubose and Atticus understood the risks they faced but continued with their actions. Scout still faced scolding from Mrs. Caroline. Jem eventually told his father what he had done to the Radley’s. Mrs. Dubose died from been free from Morphine. Atticus finally wins in his mind. They might lost or won but they do not regret their courage they showed, so good could happen.
