1. Cognitive computations and machine intelligence a)
Using the ABC categories by Lighthill and ideas discussed in class, provide a definition of (a) cognitive computations and (b) machine intelligence. Explain HOW and WHY cognitive computations can enhance machine intelligence.
Lighthill categorized the main three areas of research in artificial intelligence to catego- rizes A, B and C, where A stands all works on Advanced automation to make machines do things by themselves, C stands for researches on human’s brain and Central Nervous System (CNS), and B stands for Bridge activity concerned with building robots for purposes which include the feeding of information into the work of categories A and C.
Cognitive computations are any computing process that is done by human brain or a machine to simulate consciousness and provide useful decision-making information for action by the human or the machine. Hence, researches in categories A and C are related to cognitive computations.
Machine intelligence is the result of using valuable decision-making information pro- vided by cognitive computations, and taking an action based on it. The intelligent machine (robot) appears to be conscious on doing its designed/ assigned task. Each robot is …show more content…

Here PCA algorithm provides the means of eigen faces for each category of emotion for the intelligent device and the job of the device would be to employ a measure of similarity (in a very simple case, a distance metric), to realize the closest eigen face to observed face. Hence, a computation algorithm (in this case PCA) enhances device’s
