Why should a student attend an HBCU, some may ask. Those considering attending college should attend an HBCU no matter what their race or ethnicity may be. Many people think HBCUs are only African American colleges due to what the acronym stands for, Historically Black Colleges and Universities. According to CollegeXpress, “HBCUs do primarily serve African American students, but that doesn’t mean you’re going to have a limited cultural experience. On the contrary, people from all over the world come to the United States to attend HBCUs, which results in diverse student bodies.”(1) Anyone can attend and sometimes when an individual is not black and decides to attend an HBCU, scholarships are given because they want to show that they are willing to accept anyone, regardless of their race. Some HBCUs that are listed as being the best are: Hampton University, Howard University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College, but they are just a few of many out there to attend. There are also several famous people who attended HBCUs: Jesse Jackson, Wanda Sykes, Samuel Jackson, Toni Morrison, and Oprah Winfrey. Many students that have attended an HBCU love the friendly environment, the diversity, and the knowledge gained. If a student is not financially stable, the HBCU is willing to work out payment arrangements and help out in an effort for the student to receive the education that they deserve. An already thriving interest in Southern History was strengthened when I studied North Carolina History from 1524 to 1835 with the preeminent North Carolina Historian, Alan Watson which was an unforgettable experience for someone who aspires to pursue Southern History. The course increased my understanding of the area’s past as well as the present. Furthermore, I took a US Regional History seminar that focused on the Reconstruction Era to the Reagan Revolution. Dr. Monica GIsolfi chose invigorating topics that incited fresh perspectives. Conscious efforts to connect the past to events that are actively occurring added an innovative dimension to this learning experience. The second I stepped onto the campus, I knew that it was where I wanted to be and I felt like I was at home. The atmosphere felt friendly and family-like, the campus and the surrounding area was beautiful, academics are amazing, and the athletics and their facilities are great. The most appealing of these factors to me was the outstanding criminal justice program. This really caught my eye because my long-term goal after college is to work in the criminal justice field as a criminal investigator or a crime scene investigator. Coming out of my senior high school was one of the most difficult tasks I 've been given up to this point in my life. I was overwhelmed, excited, sad, busy, and uncertain of the near impending future. The past 13 years of my life I had been studying, practicing, playing, and working my way towards a brighter future. I could see the future in front of me, it was as if I could reach out and touch it. It was almost like getting a shot at the doctors, I knew it was what was best for me but I was terrified anyway. But I pushed aside my fears and on August 8, 2015, I set foot on a college campus, my home for the next four years. I knew why I was there though; I came to college in order to channel the love I have for my country into the motivation necessary to take the next step up the ladder towards a constitutional law degree, a degree I’ll use to protect this country and the people who reside in it. But to truly understand why I came to college, I have to start at the beginning.
When people head off to college. They have a very tough decision to make. That is to choose the right college that suits them best. In addition, people always argue about which school is best. Wichita State University is a great campus with a lot of substantial academics. However, people always have an ideal college atmosphere that would enjoy. To put it another way, there is always improvements people see to enhance the college experience. Such as Wichita State University compared to an ideal campus environment.
As a young woman growing up in an urbanized setting and attending public schools all of my life, when the time came to start planning and searching for colleges, I searched for schools that I felt fit my persona, that I would be comfortable attending for some of the most integral years of my life. My search included schools such as Temple University, and Pennsylvania State University, higher education institutions that allowed me to challenge myself, but at the same time would put me in a setting where I would be with others just like myself, fitting into the standard American university fashion.
I went on the trip with my brother and four other students who were picked by the teachers. When we went to the college we went on a tour of the campus where we learned some history like that cookies and cream was created at SDSU. We picked out two classes that we would like to visit I picked civil engineering and aviation. Civil engineering was very confusing and consisted of long complicated equations that I didn’t understand so I knew that I didn’t want to do that in college. Aviation was my favorite class because we saw the planes up close and met a former student who is now in the military and we also got to mess around with a flight simulation. I was also picked for a alternate for another camp called MCOLS or Mountaineer Cadet Officer Leadership School which would also teach me how to be an even greater student in
