Everyday, students and teachers alike trudge through front doors of high schools all across the world. And, even though Tinker vs. Des Moines does not rid students and teachers of their First Amendment right, they are limited on their use of the *First Amendment, thanks to censorship. In high school, students are going to be offended if not by another student than accidentally by a teacher; however, instead of maturely dealing with being offended, most students nowadays have been programmed to go home and complain to their parents, who complain to the school board, who, in turn, hound the schools about watching what they say. Now to some extent, schools need censorship, but when censorship becomes an issue, it causes more harm than good. In
For example, when someone mentions a controversial topic such as rape or sexuality, instead of understanding different people have different views, the person on the other end of the conversation jumps to conclusions and becomes extremely offended and basically throws a hissy fit. Censorship is not necessarily the root of the the problem, rather a result of the newly-found close-minded society who think they are open-minded. In fact, in a survey conducted during a JEA/NSPA Fall 2014 Convention, approximately eight percent of student media advisors have been threatened by school officials to be fired based on topics covered by their students. Another eighteen percent were told not to publish an article because a school official objected. By striking fear in teachers, school boards are able to control what is spoken throughout the school and are therefore a main reason for the unprepared students leaving high school and heading off into the real world. Aside from school boards, parents are also allowing for such ignorance. Sixty percent of curriculum/book challenges are headed by parents, under the pretenses of being sexually explicit, promoting homosexuality, and anti-family sentiments (NCAC, 2012). Whether parental persuasion is due to their power over their child 's education or the fear that they could cause the infamy of a high school if they form a large enough group, without a control over parents, schools will never be able to put a seal on the censorship
