The Cask of Amontillado and The Tell Tale Heart are both legendary literary masterpieces. Two identical works on the surface, but upon a second read some may notice the subtle differences in the characters and their intentions. Edgar Allan Poe had a knack for writing atmospheric and often unsettling stories and these two work no different. They both emulate the feelings and thought processes of mad man that are willing to do anything that to settle there frustrations. There 's many minor obvious aesthetical differences between both the texts, like how both killers where men or how both killings where done during the night; But the main focus point many readers may not have noticed was the heart. Though the narrator of The Tale Heart can be argued as clinically insane, but if we take what he saying as truth because we have no reason not to, we would see that the narrator had no hatred for his victims. He even said in the opening "Passion there was none. I loved the old man"(Poe 1843). So it 's obviously he loved the old man but it was the eye that drove him to murder. Unlike in The Cask of Amontillado" where it 's quite clear he 's had a seeded hatred of Fortunado. he exclaims "THE thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge"(Poe 1846). The reasoning 's are wildly different one was a story of revenge and the other is a story of a man drove to kill a man he once loved because his eye disturbs him. This may have been done for the mass amount of readers to have no reason to side with the killer because of how random it was. While the readers aren 't clearly supposed to side with the narrator of The Cask of Amontillado they can gather a small amount of sympathy because you can tell the narrator has suffered and have been offended for quite a while by his victim while the narrator of The Tale Heart has no identical form of sympathy. Cause of death is similar between both stories; While different in exicution both victims in each stories died of suffocation. They both where confident in their deliveries to keep both their victims unaware of their demises; But in Tell Tale Heart the narrators paranoia gets the best of him and he reveals the severed body parts of his victim, "tear up the planks! here, here!"(Poe 1843). Edgar Allan Poe has a style that is dark and morbid. His tone is very gloomy and obscure. The tone of “The Cask of Amontillado” is almost tame compared to the tone of “The Black Cat”, his other work we covered. The tone of that work is almost maddening. “The Cask of Amontillado” tone is very sinister and methodic. Whereas “The Black Cat”, has a pulse to a cadence and rhythm though no clear pattern is established. Poe’s style of writing seems so personal, as a reader I had to remind myself this was fiction. The Tell Tale Heart is a story, on the most basic level, of conflict. There is a mental conflict within the narrator himself (assuming the narrator is male). Through obvious clues and statements, Poe alerts the reader to the mental state of the narrator, which is insanity. The insanity is described as an obsession (with the old man's eye), which in turn leads to loss of control and eventually results in violence. Ultimately, the narrator tells his story of killing his housemate. Although the narrator seems to be blatantly insane, and thinks he has freedom from guilt, the feeling of guilt over the murder is too overwhelming to bear. The narrator cannot tolerate it and eventually confesses his supposed 'perfect'; crime. People tend to think that insane persons are beyond the normal realm of reason shared by those who are in their right mind. This is not so; guilt is an emotion shared by all humans. The most demented individuals are not above the feeling of guilt and the havoc it causes to the psyche. Poe's use of setting, character, and language reveal that even an insane person feels guilt. Therein lies the theme to The Tell Tale Heart: The emotion of guilt easily, if not eventually, crashes through the seemingly unbreakable walls of insanity.
