In The Canterbury Tales Wife of Bath’s Tale, the author incorporates major events in the text that relate to power in many different ways. In addition, in the text the author illustrates the sovereignty that women have over man in various ways. Furthermore, there is power in knowledge because with knowledge there is freedom. Also, in the text a character loses power over the external events that occurring in their lives. In The Wife of Bath’s Tale, the author illustrates a woman’s power through authority, marriage, and punishment.

The old woman knows the information that the knight needs to save his life. In this portion of the text the author depicts that there is power in knowledge. The old woman use her knowledge as leverage against the knight. Which led the old woman to offer the knight this option to “pledge me your troth said she, here in my hand. And swear to me the next thing I demand you shall do if it lie in you might”. The knight accepts the offer that the old woman makes so he can obtain the information. In this instance the knight is powerless because of the crime he committed he must marry an old woman in order to live. Women were always viewed as weak, dependent, and powerless in the Middle Ages. Not only is it a common view during that time period, but this also is often stereotyped labeled to women today as well. In the romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the hatred of women is portrayed throughout. However, while women are certainly looked down upon, they also are influential to the knights. This romance also portrays how a woman having different characteristics, could change the way she was viewed as well. Although women in the Middle Ages appeared to lack power, the women in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight have a hidden influence over the men and actually drive the action of the medieval romance.

Some say women can get the worst out of a man, but in The Canterbury Tales, written by Geoffrey Chaucer in 1485, proves it. The tales were originally written as a collection of twenty four tales, but has been narrowed down to three short tales for high school readers. The three tales consist of “The Miller”, “The Knight”, and “The Wife of Bath” along with their respective prologues. In The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer shows the weak but strong role of women throughout the “The Knight’s Tale” and “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” to contrast different human characteristics and stereotypes on the spectrum of people.
The use of euphemism and crudeness in “The Wife of Bath’s Prologue” is simultaneously unnerving and amusing, and begs the question of how a “wicked” woman like The Wife could ever actually progress in medieval society. Chaucer incorporates subtle allusions to female sexual organs and it is this bluntness (that would raise eyebrows even today) which establishes the Wife as such a powerfully outspoken character. Because courtship in Chaucer’s time was considered worthy of complete submission, the fact that the Wife places such emphasis on domination and even psychological power hints at her being an object of irony (and not a feminist figure “before her time”). In the tale that Geoffrey Chaucer had wrote, The Wife of Bath’s Tale, a man was described as a Knight. This Knight wasn’t like any normal Knight, he messed up and raped a girl. This is a big mistake, giving a lot of Knights a bad name, and having those that look up to them start to be disappointed in them. Usually the punishment that is given to those that rape, or in general any other crime, is death or time in the slammer, however, the Queen says no because he is a good looking guy. Instead of death, he had find out what women most desire from men. He is given a year and a day to find out, and on the last day, when he nearly had given up all hope, he sees an old woman in a field who makes a deal with him. The old lady gives the Knight a choice: to have an old, but faithful, wife, or to have a drop-dead gorgeous woman, but to have her never to be faithful, before she tells him what the Queen wants to know. The old lady and Knight get married and she wants him to sleep with her, like husbands are supposed to do with their wives. They argue and she gives him the two choices again; to have an ugly wife, but she is faithful. The other choice is to have a drop-dead gorgeous wife, but is never faithful. With this, he learns a lesson, and sufficient punishment.
Sustaining his excursion for the answer, the knight stumbles across an elderly woman who coincidently possesses the answer. Cunningly, aware of his fatal fortune, she barters the answer for her unannounced request, furthermore, succumbing to the generalization of manipulation and deceitfulness. Agreeing to her conditions, the knight relays the answer to the kingdom expressing women most desire sovereignty over their husbands and lovers. Detrimentally, this stereotypes women’s profound desire as domination over their husbands. Solely owning control of personal actions and free will should never be infringed, however, if this occurs, the relationship is unequal, relinquishing control to one person. Assuming all women desire this dominion over their husbands, instead of themselves, is disrespectfully radical. Otherwise he would have been beheaded, but was spared because of his looks. Was this justice? Indeed it would have been justice back in the 1300’s because if you were beautiful you could be spared and do a noble deed for the king/queen as they asked. If you did not complete it who knows what could have happened. But for the knight, he completed what he was told to do and in fact after he raped the woman and he was being prosecuted, the journey of his made him find the true knight inside of him. The old woman choice that was offer to the knight demonstrated that he learned his lesson through his sufficient punishment and redemption for his crime.
In the movie, A Knight 's Tale, women were treated very poorly. Men were held to higher standards. The men would do mostly everything that was important or popular. Women were held back behind men doing nothing but being support to the men. You could tell the respect held for the men over women. For example when Jocelyn and William argued in the church, the priest came to yell at them but only told Jocelyn to stop. He said no word to William even though he was apart of it. Jocelyn was blamed for having such commotion even though William was very much part of the scene. The priest not once said anything to him but did say it all to her. They didn 't think so much about the role of the women but seen only as an object men had. William and Adhemar show it when they fight for her. Adhemar speaks of her as a prized possession. No woman was taken seriously or cared about. Women were only a big role when the men took interest in her. That 's all the men showed in the movie as they fought for Jocelyn.
