Joshua Nealy, a prominent medical school graduate, died last night from complications of losing his dream of becoming a practicing physician. He was 39 years-old. Soft-spoken and borderline obsessive, Joshua never looked the part of a “professional”, but, in the final days of his life, he revealed an unknown side of his psyche. This hidden quasi-Jungian persona surfaced during the last three years of pursuit of his long reputed dream profession, a position, which he spent nearly 10 years attaining. So, I didn’t actually die, however, my dream of becoming a practicing physician has been taken off life support this past March 18th. I am here, writing this to help you, the reader, help you understand that process and the various entities involved in becoming a physician, as well as ma... ... middle of paper ... ...stence in a residency program because there were not enough residency positions. Every year, thousands of well-qualified individuals take their dreams off life support because they were not chosen. This could be happening to you, or a friend of yours. This could be happening to your son or your daughter. This is a cruel end to many great people: to be straddled with hundreds of thousands in debt and no easy way to pay it back. Not to mention the need to rebrand oneself apart from medicine. Having an M.D. doesn’t make it in any way easy to do something else. Wake up! Stand with me to make a difference for everyone. Don’t let apathy and indifference be the silence which kills more dreams. Help me make a difference in the lives of the people you know and love, a difference in your community and your world. It’s all you and I have left and our time is running out.
