The need to belong in an integral part of the human psyche. All people, on some level, desire to feel a sense of belonging that will emerge from the connections made with people, places, groups, communities and the larger world. Belonging cannot be achieved without an understanding of oneself and their surroundings.

Belonging encompasses many different themes, several of which are explored in Romulus My Father. Throughout Romulus My Father the characters are either developing or not developing, an understanding of themselves and their surroundings through the connections made with people, places, groups, communities and the larger world. That is the characters are either developing or not developing a sense of belonging. The supplementary texts that I have chosen are: The Bourne Identity, which is a novel written by Robert Ludlum, based on a broken man, not only in the physical, but also in the emotional and psychological sense. The purpose of the novel is to show the struggle of a man who is attempting to put the pieces of his life back together after suffering from a sudden onset of amnesia. Through the loss of memory every aspect of his sense of belonging is completely removed, and as Bourne struggles to reclaim these aspects he struggles, to reclaim his sense of belonging. The Pursuit of Happiness is a film directed by Gabriele Muccino and is based on the inspirational true story of Chris Gardener. The film shows one man’s struggle to make something of his life, while providing for his family in the best way he can. The World at large is a song by the band Modest Mouse, and tells story of an individual’s search to belong and the problems faced in the process. In closing, belonging encompasses many different themes. For an individual to have a sense of belonging, a combination of connections with people, places, groups, communities and the larger world is needed, along with an understanding of themselves and their surroundings. All people, on some level, desire a sense of belonging. For Humans, belonging is a not want but a need, a need to be a part of something larger than ourselves. And in order to fulfill this need, we see ourselves and those around us go to extraordinary lengths to belong.
