When Barack Obama was elected as the 44th president of the United States of America, the Obama family went through a drastic transition in terms of adapting to their new lives they now had to become accustomed to due to their new residency in the White House. Prior to his presidency, Barack and Michelle Obama lived, worked, and raised their family in Chicago, which was birth place of Michelle, and their two daughters Malia-Ann, and Sasha (Natasha) Obama. Malia (10) and Sasha (7) respectively (2009), were used to a regular life living in upper-middle class Chicago until their father (Barack) was elected as president. This support that was constantly available to the first daughters from their parents allowed them to “get out of this (terms served) whole, [and] [become] poised, smart, intelligent young women” (Bono, 2016) as described by Michelle Obama in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres in September 2016. The President and First Lady put their children’s needs first, in terms of being supportive, understanding and available for their children at all measures. They worried about the negative factors of Presidency, specifically the stress/pressure that might fall on the children, Michelle and Barack himself. Barack Obama, being the first African American President in U.S.A, was subjected to a different type of high-stress, in terms of racist ideologies tainting his abilities and skills to handle the position of Presidency. He “credited morning exercise and his Hawaiian roots for his ability to keep a calm demeanor in such a high-stress environment, but he noted family is what really keeps him grounded” (Lavender, 2015), he outlines the most important factor of consistently “spending time with family, and when you have dinner with your daughters - particularly teenage daughters - they’ll keep you in your place and they’ll teach you something about perspective” (Lavender, 2015). Being the President of the U.S.A, he has found multiple outlets to relieve stress but his family seems to be an essential component in keeping him grounded and humble.
