I have, I’ve been protested and demonstrated against, picket signs for my wicked rhymes...” Eminem’s shocking and profane lyrics have caused many controversies over the years, but in his song, “Cleanin’ Out My Closet,” Eminem pours his heart out bringing up crucial memories from his past. In these first lines of his first verse, Eminem is addressing the criticism and activism he’s received for his lyrics from the public and explaining that he’s not going to take the criticism from no one and he’s going to continue to be who he is. Each person has a reason for why they are who they are today. Eminem addresses the criticism he faces as a musician for the content of his lyrics by creating the song, “Cleanin’ Out My Closet,” by using the cause and affect rhetorical organization device along with different rhetorical strategies to show the audience that they do not understand his background and how that has influenced him to be the person he is today. First, unlike many other Eminem songs, this song was a very serious song for him where he vents his anger towards his mother. Throughout the song, Eminem speaks with an angry tone as he is bringing up how his mother raised him and the type of mother she was. He starts out the third verse by saying that the information about his mom is not made for the sake of public attention, instead he is putting it out there so people can understand the upbringing he had. He uses a lot of profanity as he is talking about her and wishes bad things upon her out of anger because he is remembering his childhood and he can only remembers bad memories. In addition, Eminem portrays hatred towards his dad for abandoning him and his mother. He wishes death upon him, and says he does not even want to think about how he left. He exemplifies to his audience that his dad is a coward. Furthermore, Eminem interprets his situation to his audience by using sarcasm. He apologizes to his mom in the chorus of the song, but also tells the world how bad of a mother she was. He apologizes for hurting her and making her cry, but explains the way he feels the way he does towards her by expressing the syndromes that she left him with.
