In Edgar Allan Poe’s poem, “Annabel Lee”, the main theme is love because of the narrator’s feelings expressed towards Annabel Lee; I will prove this by looking at the repetition of certain words and the context that are used in the poem.The poem begins with the lines, “It was many and many a year ago, in a kingdom by the sea”, it gives off a setting that is similar to a fairy tale, legend, or of an older time period. According to current research, “Kingdom by the sea starts off like a fairy tale” (Shmoop). The audience now begins to get an image of a place with big castles, houses, and a type of language that isn 't recent. The speaker also began by introducing keywords that will aid to his tragedy. Proceeded by the line, “ I was a child and she was a child, in this kingdom by the sea”, now establishing that they are both children and showing just how young and pure they were. This can also begin to worry the audience that while they were deep in love; and it might not last because of their youth. “The kingdom by the sea” is also repeated again and that starts to display how Edgar Allan Poe loved using repetition to create a spooky or hypnotic aura. However, the speaker continues the stanza with a line that utters, “loved with a love that was more than love”. The young boy is now describing how intense and beautiful their affection towards each other was for being so youthful.
