[1]George Orwell was completely against totalitarianism, "He was fighting Franco 's insurgents in Spain as a member of a left-wing, but non-Stalinist militia" (BBC.com "Orwell 's Road to Dystopia"). [2]Then later in his life he wrote the dystopian novel 1984. [3]George Orwell wrote the novel 1984 to criticize the new trend of totalitarianism that was rising up; which, in his time period, would have been Hitler 's reign and then Stalin 's rise. [4] In his letter he wrote " I must say I believe...Hitler, no doubt, will soon disappear, but only at the expense of strengthening (a) Stalin, (b) the Anglo-American millionaires and (c) all sorts of petty fuhrers° of the type of de Gaulle." (TheDailyBeast.com "George Orwell 's Letter") [4]Also [21]In his diary he wrote "Mainly, Londoners tried to avoid any talk of current events" (The New York Times "Patriotism and Poultry"). [22]There was also a prominent use of propaganda in the novel, Such as a poster [24] They introduce the propaganda in the first of the book as Winston is going up the stairs he describes a poster on the landing "On each landing, opposite the lift shaft, the poster with the enormous face ... Big Brother is watching you" (Orwell 1-2). [25]There were also the Ministry of Truth 's logo, "war is peace, freedom is slavery, and ignorance is strength" (Orwell 26). [26]This would be from Stalin and Hitler 's reign when they said that their enemies were terrible and that they should be destroyed; they were was using propaganda. [28]The government in 1984 used fear to make their people [35] When Winston realizes that he is being watched he starts to think about what the spy might of saw "His earlier thought...who was the greatest danger of all" (Orwell 61-62). [36] Hitler and Stalin also used fear tactics in their reigns, they said that their enemies were the worst and the people underneath the leaders believed them The people were afraid of what would happen to them if their leader 's failed. [37]The use of surveillance is seen many times in 1984, they had the telescreens and the thought police. [39]They used the thought police, and the Spies to make sure that everyone was obeying and acting the way that they should. [41] "the enemy of the moment always represented absolute evil ... torture and death" (Orwell 34). [42]In this quote Winston is talking about how the party can make anything in the past never happen again, They can do the same with people, " tracking down and deleting from the press...to have existed" (Orwell 42).     He purchased a small journal from a shop and began to write in it out of view of the telescreen in his house, which allows anything in front of it to potentially be seen or heard. At first he had some difficulties as he could only manage to write jumbles of some of his memories, but then he began to write things like “DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER (Orwell, page 18).” He later had an encounter with one of his fellow coworkers, O’Brien, which got him thinking that there might be others out in the world who see things the way he does, including O’Brien himself. Winston eventually decides that his diary will become a sort of letter to O’Brien, and to a future or past where things might have been different. In these diary entries he wrote things such as, “To the future or to the past, to a time when thought is free, when men are different from one another and do not live alone—to a time when truth exists and what is done cannot be undone…(Orwell, page 28).” This refers to how citizens think and act the same and previous events are not written as they happened, but altered to Big Brother’s benefit. He also wrote, “Thoughtcrime does not entail death: thoughtcrime IS death (Orwell, page 28).” This can be further explained by Winston’s previous thought, “The consequences of every act are included in the act itself (Orwell, page 28).” Winston

    Winston is confronted with struggle throughout the entirety of George Orwell`s dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. Living within a totalitarian regime subsequently causes Winston to seek approaches for dealing with such abundant oppression; he finds liberation through self-awareness, understanding and ultimately rebellion. First, Winston realizes that “if you want to keep a secret you must also hide it from yourself”, alluding to the notion of thoughtcrime (162).
