In Dan Milman’s The Way Of The Peaceful Warrior, and in Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist all women play a major role in the protagonists’ lives. In different ways, they are there to give huge support to each character so they could accomplish their Personal Legend. Joyce’s presence is crucial in Dan’s life. He absolutely needs her and her support to accomplish his Personal Legend. Whenever she is absent in his life he feels completely vulnerable, and lost so her presence is extremely necessary. In the other novel, The Alchemist, Santiago falls in love with Fatima who changes his desires. He no longer wants to find his treasure because he sees his treasure as less important than living his life with Fatima. Fatima refuses, and does not let him abandon his dream. Socrates has a very complicated way of supporting Dan that is the reason why Socrates does not have the same impact on Dan as Joyce. Joyce provides support to Dan that no one else can this is why her presence is necessary for him to accomplish his Personal Legend. For example, when Joy tells Dan that they can no longer see each other he feels that a piece of his life has fallen and shattered. That shows how Joyce’s presence is important to Dan’s life, and happiness. She brings an element that Socrates, nor anyone else, can bring to Dan. Also, the reason why Joyce’s presence is so essential is she always gives advice to Dan in order to help him achieve his personal Legend. for instance, after the accident when Dan feels down because he worries that he can not do gymnastics anymore, Joyce comes to visit him to lift his spirit by saying that every obstacle has a purpose. She gives all the support that she can possibly give to help Dan accomplish his Personal Legend. That is the reason why her presence is so important.
