Alternate Ending-‘Of Mice and Men’
As the sun set behind the rugged hills of the Gabilan Mountains, the Salinas River rolled along the hilltops, and meandered quietly down towards the valley. It was late afternoon and already the sun had left the summit. The top of the hills now looked aphotic in the shadows.
Under the trees skitters of lizards on leaves could be heard. The leaves lay charred in the sun like burnt toast. The rabbits rushed out of the brush away from foxes, as lizards skittered once more, through the crisp leaves back towards the brush.
In the trees the birds stopped singing, and gradually quietened down until silence had completely fallen over the hills. They sat in their nests, motionless, like small figures, lifeless. All could be heard was the wind, and the occasional tumble of leaves onto the rocky surface beneath.
On the bank of the water, the lifeless trees swayed heavily in the enduring winds. Clouds could be seen not far off in the north, reclaiming the sky rapidly. The mood was changing swiftly as dusk descended dashingly on the hills of the Gabilan Mountains.
Lennie was sitting in the barn. He was quietly petting his dog in the hay. He sat there, gazing into its big puppy eyes and stroking it with his giant thumb, and holding it under the stomach with his paw like hand. Lennie was content; so were the other animals in the barn. The horses stood there and watched peacefully as Lennie continued on stroking the puppy. You could see that Lennie showed affection for the puppy, as he was caring for it and petting it. “No! Don’t do it!” pleaded Lennie.
Lennie’s eyes looked to George for help, just as the puppy had looked to his, right before it died. His eyes widened, and then his face dropped fast, as George just stood there and watched, just as Lennie had when the puppy died.
Curley pulled the trigger. Just before he pulled it his wife jumped in front of Lennie, there was nothing he could do but cringe and turn away as her body hit the floor with a loud crack. As Curley turned back around to check on his wife, he heard another gun being loaded, and as he turned back, George pulled the trigger. Curley dropped next too his wife. They lay there like two sleeping puppies. Lennie glared at George. He knew what Lennie was going to say.
“George...do I still get to…”murmured Lennie hopefully.
“No Lennie, it’s over,” said George under his breath.
George also knew that Lennie had dug a hole for himself and could never get out. He knew they were looking for Lennie and wouldn’t stop until they killed him. He decided to do it himself in the kindest way he could. It’s like when Candy said about his dog, “I should of shot that dog myself.'; meaning it would have been kinder to the dog. Lennie was lying down, facing away from George and didn’t know he was going to be shot. He didn’t know what was going to happen, just like Candy’s dog.
The sound of the gavel arose in the courtroom. Ranch hands of Tyler barn was sitting behind Candy. "Because you murder a human, according to Penal Code 189 you are sentenced three years in jail and 500 dollar fine." ordered Judge.
There was a heavy rain outside, but other than that, the room was silent. George stared at the bunk where Lennie slept, unable to sleep. He was filled with hatred of the world that forced him to kill his own friend. As the night dragged on his hatred shifted to Curley’s wife, then Curley. “If Curley hadn’t let his tramp wife go around and cause trouble Lennie would still be here” George thought. Just then, Lennie appeared in front of him with a look of deep sadness and pain. Seeing Lennie’s pain and suffering, sent him over the edge. “That god damn Curley!” George thought, grabbing Carlson’s gun while he slept. “This is all his fault!” he thought, consumed by rage. He shuffled over to where Curley slept and pulled out the gun. George aimed the gun at Curley and pulled the trigger. An instant later he is horrified by what he has done. Lennie appeared out of the brush by the deep, green pool of the Salinas River. He had been running. He knelt down quietly by the pool’s edge and drank barely touching his lips to the water. He finished drinking and sat down embracing his knees on the bank, facing the trail entrance. He became very skittish and jumpy. Every little noise prodded for his attention. He knew he had made a huge mistake and George would be mad at him. He had remembered though, that George told him to hide here and wait for him.
George begins to hear the footsteps of the other men. To prevent the men from killing Lennie, George decides he has to kill Lennie himself. The scene is almost parallel to when Carlson shot Candy’s dog and Candy regretted that he did not kill his dog himself, but allowed a complete stranger to do it. As George talks to Lennie about the dream farm, “.[George] raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the muzzle of it close to the back of Lennie’s head. He pulled the trigger.
Disappointment is someone being sad or mad about something they have done or failed to do. Disappointment can be caused by other people’s actions. In the book “Of Mice And Men” by John Steinbeck, the characters of Crooks, Candy, and Curly’s wife all suffer from disappointment of life. Crooks suffer from disappointment from how nobody wants to play or talk to him just because he is black. Also Curly’s Wife suffers because women don’t have that much of rights so she gets treated badly. Candy gets also treated badly because he is old and only has one hand to use so he can’t do that much work. All of the people in the book get treated badly because the book “Of Mice and Men” is made during the time period that the great depression was so there wasn’t that much of rights towards women and black people.
I have been analysing the novella ‘Of Mice and men’ by John Steinbeck, which was published in 1937. Steinbeck wrote the novel based on his own experiences as a bindle stiff in the 1920’s, around the same time when the great Wall Street crash happened, causing an immense depression in America. Throughout the novel he uses a recurring theme of loneliness in his writing, which may have reflected his own experiences at this time. This is evident in his writing by the way he describes the characters, setting and language in the novel.
...nning for the future, life often goes awry and leaves one with nothing but grief and pain. Identically, when George kills Lennie, even through the planning of Lennie not talking to Curley's wife and having their own farm, life went off the tracks when Lennie kills Curley's wife and George is left with pain and grief when he is left to kill Lennie and be alone.
The movie of Of Mice and Men had many differences while still giving the same message that the book was portrayed to have. One of the major differences was that Candy never came into the room when Lennie and Crooks were talking to each other. This was major because Crooks never found out that the plan was true about the little house. In the book after he heard Candy talk about it he wanted to get in on the deal. Also the movie it never showed Lennie have his illusions of his Aunt Carla and the rabbits when he was waiting by the pond.
One of Lennie's many traits is his forgetfulness. He easily forgets what he is supposed to do, but he somehow never forgets what he is told. An example of how Lennie is forgetful is when he has the mice in his pocket and when he went to pet them they bit his finger. “Lennie picked up the dead mouse and looked at with a sad face. When they bit him he pinched them, and by doing that he crushed their heads” (page 5) . This is important because he knew that if he squeezed their heads they would die, but since he is forgetful, he squeezed anyway. Another example of how Lennie is forgetful is when he grabbed Curley's hand and crushed it. “ Curley’s fist was swinging when Lennie reached for it. Lennie squeezed on until George came running in shouting ‘let go’. The next moment Curley was on the ground wailing while he held his crushed hand” (page 64). This event is important because Lennie had held on, not knowing what to do next, until George told him what to do. A final exampl...
The first thing to see, looking away over the water, was a kind of dull line - that was the woods on t'other side; you couldn't make nothing else out; then a pale place in the sky; then more paleness spreading around; then the river softened up away off, and warn't black any more, but gray; you could see little dark spots drifting along ever so far away-trading-scows, and such things; and long black streaks-rafts ... and by and by you could see a streak on the water which you know by the look of the streak that there's a snag there in a swift current which breaks on it and makes that streak look that way; and you see the mist curl up off of the water, and the east reddens up.
As the first rays of the sun peak over the horizon, penetrating the dark, soft light illuminates the mist rising up from the ground, forming an eerie, almost surreal landscape. The ground sparkles, wet with dew, and while walking from the truck to the barn, my riding boots soak it in. The crickets still chirp, only slower now. They know that daytime fast approaches. Sounds, the soft rustling of hooves, a snort, and from far down the aisle a sharp whinny that begs for breakfast, inform me that the crickets are not the only ones preparing for the day.

Closer and closer to the calm water, I began sinking deeper in the sand. It was comforting, the silence, tranquility, and warmth of the faint sun. There is a slight breeze, warm, but cold and lonely. I could smell the scent of fish blowing through my hair and body. The sun was still fading, slowly but surely the day was almost over. About half of it is gone now. I could see shades of blue, red, purple, and pinkish-yellow. They were mixed with puffy clouds that lined the beginning of the sky and the end of the water. I noticed the darker shades on the bottom of the lower clouds.
The sunset was not spectacular that day. The vivid ruby and tangerine streaks that so often caressed the blue brow of the sky were sleeping, hidden behind the heavy mists. There are some days when the sunlight seems to dance, to weave and frolic with tongues of fire between the blades of grass. Not on that day. That evening, the yellow light was sickly. It diffused softly through the gray curtains with a shrouded light that just failed to illuminate. High up in the treetops, the leaves swayed, but on the ground, the grass was silent, limp and unmoving. The sun set and the earth waited.
