America and Haiti’s social system works by everyone belonging into a different category of class. Few people belong to the 1 percent, some in the middle and the rest live in poverty. Some people many argue that poverty doesn’t exist in United States because it is one of the richest countries, but poverty seems to be hidden. Meanwhile in Haiti, poverty is every visible because natural disasters and the people on top have caused it. In both countries, poverty turns into misogyny because people view women as object. Therefore, the system of social class in America is similar to other countries in their problems, although the main difference is that poverty in America can be invisible.

In Haiti there is a system of child trafficking call “Restavek” parents give their children – its always a girl, to a stranger, to work as a slave. The narrative mentions “Marilaine is a very sweet 13-year-old from the countryside who is a restavek, she arrives at school with marks indicating she’s been beaten …” (Kristof) I’m angry at the fact that Haitian parents give their children away to function as a slave, putting the children in danger to be physically and mentally abuse because of the lack of resources. Barbara Ehrenreich is an American author and political activist who wrote an article called “It Is Expensive to Be Poor” there she mentions “The original welfare reform bill – a bill, it should be recalled, which was signed by President Bill Clinton – included an allocation of $100 million for “chastity training” for low-income women” It’s inhuman to control women from getting pregnant just because they can’t afford a pregnancy. Thus, I agree poverty in America isn’t as horrifying as other countries, it does exist. Therefore, Education is one of the ways out, if the 1 percent helps the community who lives in poverty by donating money to better schools that open up opportunities and prevents children from falling back to poverty. However, people with power need to stop blaming women for poverty, instead, they need to focus on finding a solution to better the country. In David Brooks’ op-ed “The Undying Tragedy,” he discusses four main hypotheses regarding poverty and aid in Haiti. His ideas about poverty, as viewed through the modernization, dependency/world-systems, and post-structural theoretical perspectives lead to three different conclusions. Specifically, as viewed through a modernization lens, the “truths” Brooks puts forth seem fairly in accordance with the perspective, with some minor addendums needed. The dependency and world systems theories again agree with some of Brook’s hypotheses, but would disagree with some of the assumptions he makes in regards to culture and paternalism. Finally, the post-structural theory would find the most problems with Brooks’ claims, likely disagreeing with his assumptions about the effects of culture on poverty and his view of the development process.
I am writing this letter to ask that please do help Haiti overcome severe food insecurity which is killing Haitians people day by day. Haiti is the poorest country in America and has been annually suffered from the serious affection of harsh weather condition and severe food insecurity for over 50 years . Unfortunately, this country affected by a Hurricance Matthew which leads this country to be driven deeper into imporverish in 2016. The devastating hurricance made Haiti’s old problems worse and left hundred of Haitians acute malnutrion.
I do not believe there is an answer for poverty because it’s such a big issue all around the world; however, it's more serious in some parts of the worlds than others. After reading “Flavio’s Home” I couldn’t understand how poverty existed in the United States as it does in Rio. America’s poverty will never compare to theirs, and the worst part is, that in other regions of the world, it's even worse. No wonder so many people put their lives at risk just to migrate to the U.S. in the hopes of a better life. People think that by migrating to better established countries than their own, it will decrease their chances of living in poverty. However poverty is just an issue that can’t ever be solved because everyone seeks more material possessions and money, which eventually runs out.
Poverty is a complex and growing problem in the United States. As of right now there is no solution. There are proposals and acts, such as Obama Care, that were enacted in an attempt to help people in poverty, and there are so many organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity and The Hunger Project, that try to aid people when they start to lack the necessities, like food and shelter. College students are graduating college with a large amount of student loans and no way of paying them off, people are being evicted from their homes, and employees are being laid off. Many people take advantage of the fact that their government doesn’t really care about its citizens; as a result, the wealthy folks use it to their advantage. In order for one to survive, in a world where their government is either corrupted or lacking resources, they have to trigger strategies to increase income. In essence, the government is supposed to help its citizens since it’s the major source of power. However, in some countries, the government’s help is not enough due to lack of resources to support revolutionary projects. In the story “Live Free and Starve” the author Divakaruni expresses the ruthless and beneficial side of poverty. She states that in low economy countries, poverty is considered as normal for its hopeless citizens who have no hope whatsoever in revolution. As a result, they don’t even try to change the already working system for them. With that said I think that the poor hopeless slave is complacent in many ways with a job that probably a person in first world country would hate. Since a nation is lacking rules, people tempt to do whatever is benefiting them. There are many effects of that, but one of the most outrageous ones is unbelievably low wages, hiring kids and even buying them off their parents to do dirty and dangerous labor. Haiti’s economic freedom is 48.1 making it economy the 151st freest country while in the last several years Declines in the management of government spending, freedom from corruption, and labor freedom make its overall score 2.6 points lower than last year.
