Imagine waking up one morning tied to a chair with a gun pointed to your head. That person on the other side of the gun makes the decision on whether you live or die. How would you feel if someone else took away your ability to live? Nothing you say or do will change the fact that you may die right then. Likewise, babies do not have a choice on life or death when they are in their mother 's womb. If the mother decides to abort her child, the baby has no say. I believe that abortion is wrong under most circumstances.
Abortion was legalized in America on January 22, 1973. A United States Representative says he has tracked down well over 54 million deaths from abortion since then. In 2012, there were 699,202 deaths from legal induced abortions

In an article done by Frederica Mathewes-Green from “Feminists for Life,” she has recorded evidence that the mother suffers serious repercussions following abortion. For example, it is natural at the end of pregnancy for the cervix to open up. During abortion, the cervix is pried open very quickly, damaging the surrounding muscles that could put any future pregnancies at risk of miscarriage. Scarring can also be done when the vacuum enters her body, which could make it so that the woman would never be able to get pregnant because the sperm cannot reach the egg. This procedure can be considered more invasive then than rape, a strange doctor entering her body and sucking a big portion out of her insides. Infections are also very likely to happen after this procedure. Women still suffer through a depression similar to post partum depression after the termination. According to a study done by Britain’s Royal College of Psychiatrists, 81 percent of women that have the procedure done are subsequent to suffering from mental health problems. Some women attempt suicide after abortion. There are several psychological conditions that follow abortions. Some may experience emotions similar to anxiety, grief and guilt. There have been several cases where young ladies are persuaded by their guardians to have an abortion and suffer from the same psychological conditions. By illegalizing abortion it would save these hurting women from these …show more content…
Dr. Alfred Bongiovanni, former professor of pediatrics and obstetrics at the University of Pennsylvania, stated: "...I submit that human life is present throughout this entire sequence from conception to adulthood and that any interruption at any point throughout this time constitutes a termination of human life..." (Why Life Begins at Conception) Murder is defined by Webster’s dictionary as deliberately killing a person. So if life is present throughout the entire pregnancy, and someone terminates this process that is clearly murder. Some may argue that the Supreme Court has declared it as women’s “fundamental right” to be able to terminate pregnancy if they wanted to. It is her choice because it is her body. Her body is being used to grow a baby so it is no longer just her body. She is sharing it with the growing human inside. A pro-choice individual may add that the babies are not independent, that they cannot live without the mom therefore abortion is just termination of the pregnancy not a real human life. Pregnancy is defined by Webster dictionary as “the condition of a woman or female animal that is going to have a baby or babies: the condition of a pregnant woman or female animal.” The mother may not have the funds to support this baby. There are many families in America that cannot properly fund their kids; does this give them the right to end their lives because the mother simply does not have the
The article “Abortion Harms Women” suggests supporters of legalized abortion downplay the health and mental risks associated with abortion. Research has indicated there is short and long-term physical and mental harm related to abortion (“Abortion Harms Women”). Abortion can cause many physical complications for the women, such as infections, excessive bleeding, and blood clots. They can even be life-threatening in some cases. In the article “Abortion Harms Women” the writer points out abortion is surprisingly the fifth leading cause of death maternally in the United States. There are certain complications, including infection, hemorrhage, pulmonary embolism (blood clot), and complications from anesthetics that are responsible for a woman’s death (“Abortion Harms Women”). Also, there is a greater risk of mortality the further along a woman is when she has an abortion. Along with the physical risks associated with abortion, there are the psychological risks. Abortion can cause women to feel ashamed or guilty, resulting in an increase in emotional pain. In the article “Abortion Harms Women” the writer explains many emotional problems that can affect women after an abortion. Some women experience an increase in the use of alcohol and drugs. Studies have shown that 34% of women are at a greater risk for anxiety and depression. Also, there is a 60% increase for women to
Abortion is a complex social and moral issue that remains unresolved in today’s society. It is continuously changing and renewing under new influences presented by different individuals as well as the global civilization as a whole. Arguments from both sides are often extremely dogmatic and defensive, presenting merely from one perspective. However, the common argument revolves closely on what the true definition of a person or a human being is and its relations to whether a fetus is a human being or not from the moment of conception. This is examined from a liberal point of view by Thomson (Thomson, 1971, p. 47-66), who explains that abortion can be justified in a wide range of cases and challenges the notion that it is morally impermissible. Anti-abortionists have taken an opposite stance and claimed that Thomson’s argument is exaggerated and patently false. In this paper, I will briefly examine Thomson’s perception of abortion and explain how the analogies demonstrated in her paper assist in supporting her view on legal abortion as well as why I agree with Thomson on some parts of her argumentation.
Twenty-one percent of all U.S. pregnancies end in abortion (“Induced ABortion in the United States). Abortion is murdering defenseless babies who would‘ve otherwise had a happy life with a couple that is unable to have their own child. Is killing an innocent person ever moral?
Pro-choice activists only focus on the positives of being able to choose whether a woman can keep her baby. They don’t look at the risks that come with abortion like “shame, guilt, and regret” (Chittom & Newton, 2015). Abortion doesn’t only effect a woman mentally, but also physically. There is a possibility of death or complications when having an abortion. Anything can go wrong even if it is rare for it to happen. I don’t believe a woman should put her physical health at risk in order to kill her own baby. It sound harsh saying the word “kill”, but that is the reality. Pro-choice supporters try to shy away from using phrases like “killing” and “baby” because of how harsh it sounds. They would rather use words like “fetus”, “embryo” and “annihilate”. Using those word make the reality of killing an innocent baby seem less harsh. They bring up reasons to support their stance like stating that “a woman must have the power to control a decision as significant as parenthood, and that individuals should be able to influence decisions to the same extent that those decisions affect their lives” (Anderson, 2015). Their reasoning isn 't good enough. A woman can have the power to make her own decisions at another time. She can decide many things for herself, but abortion shouldn 't be one of
Abortion has always been a hard decision for a women to have to make. Mainly because people have always viewed abortion as either morally wrong or not wrong at all. Everyone has different thoughts and concerns when it comes to abortion. There are a numerous amount of reasons why a women has to choose abortion, whether it be rape, the feeling of being unprepared, not ready age wise or their life is in danger, whatever the case may be it should be their choice.
Abortion has so many different view points on the topic, some positive some negative. Roe verse Wade played a huge part in the decision making process on abortion. Everyone has their own opinions about abortion but the opinion concerning when life begins had a significant effect on a person’s views concerning whether they are for or against abortion. The studies of long term effects from abortion on women are traumatic and devastating. They can include mental, physical, and emotional problems after an abortion.
When it comes to abortion I believe that it should always be left up to the woman to make the decision on whether to keep her baby or not. Having a baby is no eas...
Abortion is a voluminous topic today all around the world. Differing viewpoints on abortion are recognized in politics, religion, and throughout the general population. There is a small amount of people who are nonchalant on the subject. Women have abortions for many different reasons and according to certain groups these reasons are either justified or not. Everyone tends to have their own articulated opinion, and many vocalize tenaciously what they believe. Pro-life individuals along with religion are sanguine that abortion is ethically and morally erroneous. Whereas those who are pro-choice say that abortion is inconsequential and the mother’s choice is more important than the fetus. Reasons to not get an abortion include risks involved in receiving an abortion. In some cases death can occur. However, there are other alternatives to abortion. For example, raising the child and adoption.
The side effects of the abortion is not just physical, it is very much so emotional. In several cases, mothers who have had abortions are left with emotional trauma. Some emotional trauma includes, eating disorders, depression, flashbacks and suicidal thoughts. Along with emotional side effects there is physical sides effects of an abortion. Some of the physical side effects mothers deal with is damage to the cervix and internal organs, not having a complete abortion, infection and scarring of the uterus lining. With abortions the mothers have a higher risk of developing cancer. According to the American Pregnancy
Every woman has the right to make any decision that involves her body. Our government has always respected the individual’s right to privacy. A woman’s reproductive system should not be regulated by the government. In the Supreme Court case, Roe v. Wade in 1973, the decision to make abortion legal came in effect (Frohock 1983). Before Roe, many women were pregnant were forced to weigh their respect for the law against their positivism that they were not ready to be mothers. Many women chose to break the law, putting their lives and futures at risk, and decided to get unsafe and expensive procedures.
Since the early 1970’s abortion has been an important issue to the United States (Tietze 1). The problem begins with whether it is the woman’s choice to keep or terminate her pregnancy or the government’s choice. When this problem happens, a woman loses her right as a person. Most women argue about this issue, but if you look at it, it is the woman’s body, and she should do with it as she pleases. I believe that if a woman, under the right circumstances, should be able to make her own choices in life and not be influenced by family or the government.
Out of numerous controversial subjects, the topic of abortion has made its way up the list of most talked about. By medical definition, an abortion is the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus (“Abortion”). Among the controversy, two sides have formed. One side is known as pro-life and the other pro-choice. Pro-life supporters state that life beings at the moment of conception and believe that the unborn baby has the same rights as its mother. Pro-choice supporters believe that it is the woman’s right to decide what she does with her body and that pro-life supporters are against the rights of women and free choice. I personally believe
The issue of abortion is a very controversial one. There are many opinions about it that are largely discussed. People have many ideas about abortion that are possible based on their faith and morals. Most women who are pregnant and go in for abortions do not receive all the facts. Their doctors should inform them about the extremely serious side effects that can come from abortion. Abortions cause women physical and mental side effects that can cause them great pain, complications, and even death. What is abortion, though? Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. Abortion procedures change according to the stage of the pregnancy. There are four main procedures that women go through when having an abortion. One being, the early medical abortion, which is usually from 0 to 9 weeks; this method is also known as the abortion pill but this is not a very accurate description, as it does not involve simply taking a pill. The next step is, vacuum aspiration abortion, which takes place 5 to 15 weeks. Vacuum aspiration simply means suction. The next method is called early surgical dilatation and evacuation, which is between 15 to 19 weeks. After the woman has been given a light general anesthetic, the doctor gently stretches the passage through the cervix until it is wide enough for narrow forceps to be used to remove most of the contents of the uterus. Then a tube attached to a vacuum pump is used to remove any remaining tissue. The final step is, surgical two-stage abortion or medical induction, which happens between 20 to 24 weeks. During a medical induction, the fetal heart is stopped and then the doctor uses drugs to induce premature labor. A surgical two...
Pro-choice activists; on the other hand, also carry very strong points. They believe that the child inside the mother is her property and its life does not begin until birth. Although many believe that abortion is a woman's choice, abortion should be banned because it is immoral and life begins at conception.Abortion is the choice of a woman in whether or not she wants to receive one. The right to choose to have an abortion is personal and essential to a woman's life. The state can not interfere in the private lives of a citizen. With the right to choose abortion, women are able to enjoy, like men, the rights to fully use the powers of their minds and bodies.
Abortion is a deliberate medical or surgical procedure that terminates a pregnancy. The U.S. Supreme Court’s 1973 ruling in Roe v. Wade legalized abortion allowing women to terminate their pregnancy within the first trimester, mobilizing advocates on both sides of the issue. Since then, abortion elicits conflicting views and has divided society into different opinions and different sides. People argue that women have a constitutional right to determine what to do with their bodies. Others say that a life is a life, no matter how small. In the United States, abortion is a controversial issue because it is a broad and complex subject that touches ethical, social, and legal issues. Although others believe a woman has the right to choose what she does with her body, abortion should not be legal because there is no consensus whether a fetus is a human, and there are other alternatives than abortion.
