Friendship Will Last A strong bond of friendship will last forever. The story of leningrad was a horrible period of time, when Germans surrounded Leningrad, and prevented any food supplies from reaching into the city, so Russians have a lot of heroic stories about that time how people managed to survive without getting killed. This relates toThe City of Thieves by David Benioff who uses a blend of accurate historical evidence and slight exaggeration to tell his story. This blend does not negatively affect the reader, but is rather effective in bringing the reader into the story on a more personal level on which he wrote about this two protagonist character. During chapter seven, Lev sleeps on the sitting room floor with the other visitors, while Kolya spends the night with Sonya in her bedroom. Lev is lonely and extremely envious of Kolya’s popularity with women, however Lev couldn’t stand that he couldn’t have a relationship with a woman. Lev stated, “I wished that someday some girl would stare at me that way, but I knew it would never happen. This narrow-shouldered frame, these eyes as watchful and fearful as a rodent - - I wasn’t the type to inspire lust. Worst of all was my nose, my hated notes, that that beak of a thousand insults”(75). This quotation illustrates that the main character feels the need to date a women and also shows that the character has a lack of appearance. This quote demonstrates on how he wished that someday some girl would stare and smiles at him with love. Throughout the use of the words, “worst of all was my nose…”(75). The author creates an insecure tone which suggests that Lev is not happy with his nose. During World War Two some Germans hated the Jews. Some of the Germans humiliated the Jews with their big nose. The external conflict shows that how Lev is frequently bullied by the fact that his nose looks like a Jew; his been asked frequently. Even though Lev has lack of appearance Kolya is alway there to give advice to Lev about dating a woman which maintains their humanity because when they are fighting the enemy they only think of
