Written by William Faulkner a rose for Emily is a story about an old lonely lady that was very lost about the direction her life was going. This story has a very big twist in the beginning of it because it starts towards the end of Emily Grierson’s life. It was also told by an unknown source that was probably one of the people that lived around the city during the time. Emily kills the man that she thought she was in love with. The conflict in this story is that Emily was not really able to find love which is why she acted the way she did towards everyone in the town. She lived a life whereby nobody really told her what to do, she was rebellious and she only did things for the benefit of herself and not others. Emily’s house was the best it Grierson’s taxes but she claimed her father had loaned money to the town and she believed she did not owe colonel Sartoris and the city any money. Almost every year on the first day they mailed Miss Grierson a tax notice and February always came with no reply back from her. They then went on to write a formal letter also asking her to call the sheriff’s office but she didn’t reply either. A week or so after that the mayor wrote a letter to her offering to send one of his cars for her then got a reply from her on a piece of note paper telling him that she no longer left her house at all so it was another reason why she didn’t see the need to pay taxes. A deputation knocked on her door, led by one of the servants and they went through the house. The dustiness and webs all around the house showed that the things & furniture around the house wasn’t really used like that and there was also a very unpleasant dank odor disseminating in the house. The servant then led them into the house where they sat on dusty leather sofa’s that had not been used in a while. The deputation rose when Miss Grierson entered the room. She explained to them about how she didn’t have any taxes in Jefferson and told the deputation to go and see colonel Sartoris in a very harsh voice. But she actually didn’t know he had been dead for ten The house was very lavishly decorated with architecture that was really popular in the late eighteen seventies. The house also played a big role in Emily’s insanity because it started decaying and you could tell it was not very well maintained and every piece of material around the house started rusting and showing old age which is another reason why Emily never left and she never wanted any visitors and townspeople around because they started noticing what was going on. The house represents the older days when everything was all ok in the family, the days when Emily’s father was alive. It also represented darkness and death because of the upstairs bedroom which she sealed Homer in because she didn’t want him to leave her. There was a very unpleasant stench that came from The Grierson’s house which started a lot of rumors and notions about what was really happening inside the house. Every time when one of the townspeople passed the house they lurked to try and see what was going on in the inside because it remained a mystery for quite a long time. Money was another one
