For my written assignment I decided to write about a documentary on Blues music. The documentary is called Blues Like Showers of Rain. Blues Like Showers of Rain was filmed by John Jeremy and was released in 1970. The background information for this film came from Paul Oliver 's personal collection of photographs and field recordings. This document displays the blues in rural, black, southern communities, primarily along the Mississippi Delta in Texas. In the beginning of the documentary someone says “Not very much of songs that negro got from whites because negro people always was the singing type of people” (John Jeremy). Blues is a genre. Blues music originated from African-Americans on plantations in the South. The songs are very unique. Every song is different and tells a different story. The song lyrics and the artist 's voice shows that the artist is passionate about the song topic. The musical instrument rhythms go well with the lyrics, My favorite song was “Don’t Care What Nobody Say” because there is so much soul in the lyrics about having someone stand by him. The Blues Like Showers of Rain documentary taught me that the emotional blues music was created by talented African Americans with a reason to sing the lyrics.
This documentary showed two major topics. One being the lack of privileges for African Americans. Another topic being the Blues music that African Americans made. In this documentary it was mentioned that the African Americans could not read music because they did not have the privilege of learning how to read or write so they would just play whatever sounded good to them on the streets and would earn money from playing blues music.
