The Baby Boomer Generation

The baby boomers generation span the year through 1946-1955. The parents of these baby boomers included people who had been part of the roaring 20's, people who had gone through the great depression, and who had gone through World War II. The parents of these boomers who had lives through the depression and world war wanted to pass onto their children a more secure future. These baby boom parents valued saving money for their child's future. They wanted their child to get an advanced education (college). These parents equated college with success and the opportunity for a good job. Because many parents have done with very little going though the depression they wanted their children to have more material things. The boomers were the first generation where there parents actually bought them cars to drive. Parents of the boomers didn't for-see that the automobile would bring cultural changes and a new-found independence to the young driver. This brought about a different form of dating where parents had no supervision. The boomers were the first generation to have televisions in their homes. Many had telephones in their homes. The baby boomers had many more opportunities than their parents. As compared to their parents the baby boomers had it quite easy. The silent generation sent their baby boomers off to college, paid for it if they could, and provided a car and spending money. Little did the silent generation realize that they were raising a generation who would reject many of their own values and would become more liberal in their thinking. Boomers often rejected moral standard of past generations being involved in free sex and drugs. They would become the most educated group in American history up to that time. This changed the way people travel, attend sporting events, view life with more suspicion. My generation has been handed a lot of issues to hopefully be solved by my generation. The government has a national debt and unsustainable welfare programs. Programs that are well-meaning but cannot be financed by my generation. Changes will have to come through inventive minds of my generation. Also currently there are very few job opportunities for my generation. Many college graduates cannot get jobs. College cost are at an all time high, many of my generation wonder if it is worth the cost or is it even a possibility. The American dream of a college education, a good job, nice home, and car are seeming more and more unattainable to my generation.
