Social media is a great source for breaking news. Sixty-five percent of story research from media reporters and editors come from social networking sites like FaceBook, Twitter, and LinkdeIn (Marrouat 3). For example, during the Libyan revolution Facebook became the Libyans only reliable source of news about what was going on within the country. On another note, sixty-seven percent of law enforcement believe social media helps solve crimes more quickly because criminals often expose themselves online by bragging. The Vancouver Canucks scandal is the perfect example of how social media can be used to solve crime (Shirky 5). After the Canucks lost the 2011 Stanley Cup, Vancouver erupted in a number of riots and social networking was used to restrain the rioters because they were tagged in over two thousand public pictures so police were able to catch rioters. Social media also had an significant role in the banning of Google Earth by the Bahrain government after a map of a royal family's land circulated the internet; Consequently, the government opened access to Google Earth again within four days because of the discontent expressed to social networks. Historical events like the ones listed above are molded around the use of social technologies. In The New Digital Age: Reshaping The Future of People, Nations and Business, authors Eric Schmidt and Jared Cohen anticipate what the future will hold if the world continues in this technology revolution. Using logic, insight and observation they elaborate upon the endangerments and advantages the future will hold. Although social media is a powerful tool it does not just coordinate historical moments, social media coordinates a large portion of everyday life in the 21st century. The realm of social media has taken the world by storms. Every aspect of life has now become a sharable experience or a trending moment. There are many benefits and loses that come with the world of constant information; however, one area that seems to hold more potential is that of crime investigations. Social media has allowed for the quicker discovery of criminal acts throughout the world. Criminals are more easily uncovered and punished due to the immediate availability of the event to the general public over many different social media forums.
“One day recently, Cynthia Newton’s 12-year-old daughter asked her for help with homework, but Newton didn’t want to help her, because she was too busy on Facebook. So her daughter went upstairs to her room and sent an e-mail asking her for help, but Newton didn’t see the e-mail, because, well, she was too busy on Facebook.” This unusual action, by a is from one of typical moms in this nation is excerpted from an article titled, “Five Clues…Facebook” from CNN. As the social networks system have s become rooted into our society, people have become way different from the past. As soon as Facebook came out in the world,When Facebook appeared, people were fascinated by it, and it grew as theinto the most massive, powerful social network that connects the wholein the world. Since the birth of Facebook, a majority of people became so addictive to it [D1] as Newton acted; so, what draws people into Facebook? What makes them click on the “News feed” button in every five minutes? I would like to ask a broader question: Why are people fascinated by and dependent on social media, and what is its role and impact on us?
Can excessive use of social media contribute to addictive behavior (drugs, tobacco, alcohol) or mental health issues? As we all know social media has become a pretty big resource in our society. In 1971, the first email was delivered. More than 40 years on, social media has taken the world by storm. ”These sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are being used by ‘one of four’ people worldwide” (2014, paragraph 1), if not more. Social media is able to be used on so many sources. From a computer at home, work or school, to cell phones, tablets, and iPods on the street, where ever you go. In today’s society, we often ask if social media is a good or bad thing. There so many good things about social media but even more negative things. The pros and cons are endless to say, but the reasons on why social has good or bad reputation is due to the lack of control on the internet. Social media has so many positives. From connectivity to self /business promotion or to awareness to culture. The negatives from bullying to hackers and stalkers. They lack of communication that lead to violence. Social Networks are one of the most entertaining activities to humans with over billions of accounts around the world; however, sometimes it affects us in very negative ways.
When you think about social media what do you think of. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or Vine. Well social media is more than that. Social media is not just Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Social media is any online website that lets you interact with other people, share photo and information and keeps you updated. Or do you think about how it’s made a positive or negative impact on today’s society. In my personal opinion I think social media has made both positive and negatives impacts on today’s society .Some of the negative impacts are cyberbullying and addiction, and the positive impacts are spreading the word and increasing business sales.
Social networking has increasingly had a huge impact on society. Technology has opened the door to a vast amount of information and to the ability to relay that information to practically anybody at anytime and anywhere. People are constantly checking their email, updating their status on Facebook, sending tweets on Twitter, instant messaging, and texting. The debate of whether the use of social networking is a negative or positive aspect is a continuous one. In the case of Steven Pinker, his essay “Mind over Mass Media” argues that media technologies have a positive effect on mental development. In contrast, Sherry Turkle’s essay “Connectivity and Its Discontents” asserts that technology has a negative effect on interpersonal relationships. Although Pinker makes many excellent points on how technology is improving intelligence and Turkle provides exceptional ideas of how technology is damaging to relationships, neither Pinker nor Turkle provides the best answer to this question due to their lack of credibility and inclusion of logical fallacies. Instead, we should, while aware of the risks and dangers of social networking, use the Internet to its full potential.
The impact of Social Media on Society Technology has come a long way from its existence till today. In today’s modern world, people are surrounded by technology everywhere. In the present, people are surrounded by disrupting technologies every day. Today, innovators are always creating new technologies that will make an impact on the daily lives of millions. Technology has made the lives of many people easier.
Although social media has provided todays society with instant forms of communication and ways to connect, it also created a new standard for living and has caused problems for many groups of citizens in all walks of life and has caused society to re-think its usage. There are two views about social media, either. It is a positive addition to society and its benefits outweigh the risks, or that social media causes more harm than good and it’s usage should be limited. Some of the ideas that are central to the idea that social media is a benefit to today’s society are that social media encourages increased communication with friends and family, provides fast access to breaking news and other information, and helps businesses attract new business and correspond more quickly with their existing customers.
The impacts of social media on individual people have been substantial. In some instances, these impacts have been so significant that they change the lifestyles of some users (Lenhart, Purcell, Smith & Zickur, 2010). People are seen to change their perception of some aspects of life after indulging so much in social networking. Since these changes can be either positive or negative, the good and bad of social networking remains an issue that will forever stir debates across the world.
