Abstract
The essential point of this paper is to discuss one’s exploration of Kudler’s Fine Foods, a virtual organization on Week One reSourceSM course page. Kudler is a highly successful company that has managed to expand its operation from one location to three locations in less than four years (La Jolla, Del Mar, and Encinitas). The company specializes in gourmet foods, fine wines, and cheeses. This paper will underline Kudler’s management, and explain how technology and the Internet are used and have impacted the organization. From Kudler’s revision, this paper will also identify examples of the five forces of Porter’s Model.
Overview of Management - Kudler's Fine Foods
“Successful organizations know how to manage people and resources efficiently to accomplish organizational goals in tune with changes in the external environment, such as those brought about by technology, legislation, and competitors.”
- Gomez and Balkin
According to Gomez and Balkin (2002), the management process involves planning, organizing, leading and controlling. Planning is setting future objectives and mapping out activities necessary for achieving those objectives. Organizing is specifying how the organization’s human, physical, informational, and technical resources are allocated and how tasks are performed to achieve the desired goals. Leading is motivating people to contribute their best individually and cooperating with others. Controlling is measuring performance, comparing it to the objectives, implementing the necessary changes, and monitoring progress.
Kathy Kudler is the president, founder, and senior executive officer of Kudler’s Fine Foods; she plays the role of a strategic manager. Kathy implemented a plan for Kudler by c...

...but they are only efficient if they do things right. To be a successful manager, he or she has to manage and managing is planning, organizing, leading and controlling. Organizations which identify the five forces of Porter’s Model within their industry are highly likely to be dominant in their marketplace. This paper also identified examples of the five forces of Porter’s Model which Kudler illustrated.

David Dillon has been CEO of the Kroger Co. since 2003 and is the 10th CEO in Kroger’s 130-year history. Joseph B. Hall held the CEO position from 1946 until 1964. Hall started with Kroger as a real estate manager in 1931 and later moved onto merchandising. His accomplishments as CEO was taking Kroger from a collection of 1,430 small, of mom-and-pop style corner stores into a unified chain, introducing advances in private label, product manufacturing and the company’s distinctive blue-and-white logo. Like todays manager, Hall was concerned with developing a close relationship with Kroger’s shoppers. Halls approach to gain the knowledge needed was that he and his fellow executives would actually visit shoppers in their homes to discuss their needs and concerns as part of a program known as “Kroger Calls”. Today Kroger’s CEO can simply utilize data and purchase history stored on a customer’s loyalty card to tailor their marketing strategy (Kroger CEOs, Past and Present, 2012). Halls creation of a modern day supermarket company nearly quadrupled sales to $2.3 billion.
Each department within Kudler Fine Food's organization implements certain business process with which they conduct their daily business functions. Therefore, some departments within Kudler may experience some process changes if a contractual relationship with local growers were to occur. An area that may receive an increased change in business process would be the legal area. "Kudler uses very few custom forms, preferring instead to use forms (contracts, order forms, etc) that are supplied by the parties the company is dealing with. For example, the leases on the stores were contracts supplied by the lessors. The few customized forms the company uses were obtained from "of-the-shelf" computer programs and slightly modified by Kathy or her assistants" (Apollo Group, 2003). Since Kathy Kudler is the primary legal decision maker, along with counsel from her sister-in-law and lawyer Anne Shousha.

The P-O-L-C framework, has been a reoccurring topic in these case studies and has been used to describe management processes throughout the book. P-O-L-C stands for, planning, organizing, leading and controlling, which is an exceptional framework for companies to establish themselves and keep them afloat. The discussion in this case, Pret A Manger, involves the teamwork that Pret builds itself on. In 1986, Pret A Manger started planning their company with a vision and mission to provide healthy, inexpensive food while avoiding preservatives and chemicals, as well as establishing a well-oiled team structure. In the organizing section of the framework, Pret designed its company to be able to provide for their customers for a low price, but
A management philosophy helps an individual to know the direction and the steps to follow when in a position of management. The various concepts of management have been very helpful, and they have had an impact on my personal management philosophy. Planning is an action that involves thinking about a project and organizing them in a manner that is likely to lead to the desired goal (Dumas, 2013). Planning can assist in ensuring that a task is completed in a systematic way to avoid confusion or distractions so that it has a successful outcome. Organizing aids in establishing activities and resources as well as roles are to be grouped to carry out the plan (Griffin, 2016). My personal management philosophy includes becoming an effective leader
The structure of management is hierarchical where decisions are made by the top management and passed down to the other managers and departmental heads. The objectives set are to enable one accomplish a specific goal. In traditional management authority and power are demonstrated in the way decisions are made, and the employees are internally motivated to achieve and to advance in their career. The authority is maintained and exercised through a command as well as a control style. Goals and also objectives aim at sales, policy, profits and the output of the organization (Whitman, Mattord, 1997). Traditional management cannot be practiced by an organization that wants to keep up with global competition. Challenges within the business environment have prompted the organization to change from the traditional management to a flexible
In today’s competitive business environment, effective management plays a crucial role. The article Five Minds of a Manager by Jonathan Gosling and Henry Mintzberg, identify some important aspects of effective managers. According to the author, “The world of the manager is complicated and confusing.” Consequently, mangers need to think above ordinary employees. In particular, managers should, think global and act local, collaborate through competitions, be agents of change and maintain order. This paper provides a reflective review of the article Five Minds of a Manager by Jonathan Gosling and Henry Mintzberg.
In order to achieve the goals of the organisation, managers have to set goals and developed a workable plan to complete the goals. Organising is one of the processes to organise people, activities and other resource in a logical way (Davidson 2009). Through the organising

From the case study of Jeff Griffiths, one of the most important lessons organizations can learn is the importance incorporating a business structure that operates through a divisional framework. Furthermore his business structure ensures to strategize in a manner that failure in one component of the business does not lead to a failure in the other. It can also be inferred from the case study that an entrepreneurial idea by itself cannot contribute to the success. Emotional, psychological and financial investments have to be planned and implemented by motivated individuals at a time when the window of opportunity is open(Pech 2009). The case study lesson for other organizations can be characterized under three d...
As Schermerhorn states in Management planning, organizing, leading, and controlling are the tools needed by managers to accomplish performance goals. It is crucial that managers be able to recognize and act upon problems or opportunities as they arise. Planning is perhaps the cornerstone of the four processes. All good processes were at some point given great detail so as to anticipate possible problems and solutions to those problems. When the Honda Motor Company decided it needed to refine its inventory they didn't just jump at the first idea that was proposed; they first set their objectives and discussed ways to meet those objectives. After giving careful consideration to processes and the streamlining of those processes human error rose as the top need for change. Sounds simple you might respond; in reality it is much more complicated.
